This weekend, both series return to US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, for the 2nd Annual Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival Presented by TorqStorm Superchargers. In addition to the championship heads-up and index drag racing, this event features several special events that up the high-performance ante for fans and participants alike.

Tom Bailey is bringing out his Sick the Mag Drag & Drive Invitational wherein Drag Week-style cars compete heads-up on the racetrack. Additionally, an RTRA series heads-up X275 points race will run within the event, and not one, but two Factory Appearing Stock Tire classes showcase period-correct muscle machines on stock tires.

It all kicks off today with a full slate of test and tune passes across all the categories. And, as the on-track action winds down, the racers, family, crew, sponsors, media, and vendors gather for the Weldon Pump Racer Appreciation Happy Hour from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. to enjoy chilled beverages, music, and snacks.

Here’s a look at how the action will unfold at the 2nd Annual Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival Presented by TorqStorm today.


This event marks the competition debut for Joel Wensley and his new-to-him Pro Mod Camaro. The car is the old Shadow machine that Stevie “Fast” Jackson competed with, and Wensley bought it as a roller last November. He has since installed his 521ci, Moran Racing Engines powerplant and adorned it with a ProCharger F3x-140 supercharger. The Dearborn, Michigan, resident has five test hits on the Camaro, and will have his work cut out for him at his first NMCA race in the new ride.


Back in Dart NA 10.5 competition this weekend is Dan and Don Ostgen of Michigan. The brothers have brought their heavyweight 1969 Camaro to NMCA before, but recently parted ways with their 604ci engine and replaced it with a smaller 565ci bullet built with help from Reher Morrison and Khoury Racing engines. A Dart Big M block is topped with Reher Morrison Raptor II 12-degree cylinder heads and a Bob Book carburetor. Driver Dan reported that it made significantly more horsepower than their previous effort, and now they get to pull over 100lbs of ballast from their Chevy. At a recent NA race at Milan Dragway, Ostgen’s machine went 8.02 on a soft tuneup, and they are expecting 7.80s in the heat.


David Davies and the DSR Dark Pak team are on the property, and are no doubt hoping to cash in on the Dodge//Mopar $10k that remains at stake for any Drag Pak that wins Holley EFI Factory Super Cars or NHRA Factory Stock Showdown in 2022. Davies’ Drag Pak is promoting the Save Our Allies non-profit organization that helps out in times of need. The organization has been working to extract allies from Afghanistan and more recently has been providing medical supplies to Ukraine.


2021 Hot Rod Drag Week winner Dave Schroeder is at US 131 Motorsports Park this weekend to compete in the Sick The Magazine Drag & Drive Invitational. The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada resident had his team prepping his Gran Sport Corvette and tuning up its 872ci Reher Morrison engine for test hits today. The big-block powerplant utilizes 4 stages of Monte Smith nitrous oxide delivery with John Ens tuning the Holley EFI and Calvin Hancox taking care of the chassis. Ken Murray went through the engine to enable it to endure the street driving required by various drag-and-drive events, and the Corvette has run a best of 6.42 seconds through the quarter mile.


Dodge Garage contributor David Hakim was fitting new Weld Ventura S104 wheels and Mickey Thompson tires to his 392 Scat Pack Dodge Challenger today, as he will be competing in the Dodge//Mopar HEMI Shootout this weekend. The Ventura line feature rotary forged, monoblock construction and are a strong, durable, yet relatively inexpensive racing wheel option.


Looking to keep up with the Joneses, VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod driver Craig Sullivan dropped his 1949 El Mero Mero Mercury off at Larry Jeffers Race Cars to have it fitted for a new Liberty’s Gears transmission and Quick Drive. John Salemi helped out with the torque converters and in testing, Sullivan has been 211 mph to the eighth-mile. He plans to work on the front half of his runs to improve on his 3.79 from yesterday’s test session.


Another driver entering the Sick The Magazine Drag & Drive this weekend is Jason Sack of Riverton, Wyoming. Sack’s 1969 Chevy Nova is powered by a wicked, Borowski Racing Engines-built, 429ci LSX engine that is fed atmosphere by a huge Garrett 106mm turbocharger. Sack recently added a 150-shot of nitrous during staging to spool up the turbo and Ryan Witte and Greg Powrie are handling the tuneup on the Holley EFI system.


HEMITuner proprietor AJ Berge is also competing in the Factory Super Cars category as part of the Don Schumacher Racing team. Berge’s Drag Pak debuted at the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals earlier this year.

Keith Rhea (left) is on the property this weekend competing in Mickey Thompson X275 with support from Bill Devine of Bullseye Power Turbochargers. Naturally, Rhea is running one of the company’s class-legal NLX turbos boosting a Trinity 5.4-liter Ford Modular built at his shop. Devine said that Rhea is a motivated, skilled, one-man operation that is focused on success. With only about 40 passes on this car, Rhea believes the combo is in a good place to succeed.

SEMA Chairman of the Board and Power Automedia CEO, James Lawrence, is on the property at US 131 Motorsports Park competing in Mickey Thompson X275 with his updated Evil race car. Recently revamped by Skinny Kid Race Cars, the Fox Mustang now features a double-frame-rail chassis, new Zoomie headers, a new rearend, and new brakes. He is still working through the new-car blues on the revised combination, but he hopes to make some clean hits this weekend in the ProCharged machine.
