Friday Coverage | Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival Presented By TorqStorm

Posted By: Event Coverage Team

After a day of testing capped by the Weldon Pump Racer Appreciation party last night, today’s action begins with an easy launch and quickly picks up steam on the big end.

Several classes make test hits, and in particular, the Dodge // Mopar Hemi Shootout and TorqStorm Superchargers True Street categories, get plenty of testing today to determine how their rides should run during tomorrow’s eliminations.

Many classes roll into qualifying today, which sets the stage for how the rest of the weekend will play out as racers jockey for position on the ladders before eliminations begin.

Between rounds of NMRA and NMCA racers, stars of the Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings television series make exhibition runs on the track. And, for those seeking a photo opportunity, Bigfoot is on display at US 131 Motorsports Park this weekend.

As always, keep your eye on this page and our social channels for updates throughout the day.

Here’s a look at today’s scheduled on-track action at the 2nd Annual Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival Presented By TorqStorm Superchargers.

X275 and Ultra Street racers have an opportunity to collect Radial Tire Racing Association championship points here at the Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival presented by TorqStorm Superchargers. Participating Ultra Street racers also collect NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street points as well.

The Car Crazy Canuck, Dennis Chaisson, made his NMCA debut in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars in 2021 with his brand new Dodge // Mopar Challenger Drag Pak. His car, number 3 out of 50 built in 2021, was rather rare at the time with its red, white, and blue paint scheme, but by the 2022 race in North Carolina, he was surrounded by several of them. To set his car apart, Chaisson commissioned a custom wrap that did just that, as well as promote his racing business and his YouTube channel, Drag Pak Dennis. US 131 Motorsports Park offers good memories for Chaisson, as he ran his first 7-second run in the Drag Pak here last year.

Joining the LME Street King category is Dan Murchek of Hammond, Indiana. Murchek has been helping Xtreme Street racer Nick McGrath for many years, and the after a stint in Top Dragster in the 90s, Murchek finally got back into cars but quickly was bored with car shows. Helping McGrath whetted his appetite and soon he had McGrath’s Straightline Performance shop modifying his 2021 Gran Sport Corvette. The stock bottom end LS3 still usings stock heads, but has been fortified and boosted with a Vortech YSI supercharger from East Coast Superchargers. The E85-fueled machine makes over 1,000 horsepower through the 6-speed automatic trans and independent rear suspension, will be completing license passes this weekend so he can run the 8.50-8.75 index in Street King.

Xtreme Pro Mods to the front! This weekend and every weekend, the NMCA hosts a wild array of Pro Mod machines with the tightest racing anywhere from the supercharged, turbocharged, and nitrous oxide-assisted cars.

Current NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street points leader Bill Trovato has been hard at work this year refining his LSX engine combination to stay ahead. The New York native showed up at US 131 Motorsports Park with his Holley Dominator not only controlling his ignition, but also now operating a new Holley throttle body and Fuel Injector Clinic fuel injectors. Trovato changed the nitrous oxide delivery to a dry setup, and swapped out the fuel pump for an Aeromotive 3.5 spur gear pump. Fellow Ultra Street racer Mike Thompson has been handling the tuning duties and training crew chief David Mitchell (Pictured) on the software this weekend. So far, the change has netted the results Trovato was looking for.

Five-time National Tractor Pullers Association champion and Hall of Famer Gardner Stone parked his jet turbine-powered machine and went back to drag racing with his Ford Performance Cobra Jet in the NMCA’s Holley EFI Factory Super Cars class. At the season opener in Bradenton this year, Stone’s Cobra Jet got out of shape after parachute deployment, spun around and tagged the wall. Stone dropped the Mustang of at Watson Racing, and the company got the car back into shape and installed a fresh engine as well for Stone’s return this weekend in Michigan.

Marty Robertson’s Badfish Barracuda first joined NMCA competition during the Radial Wars era, and has since been raced in a number of other classes and with various engine combinations. Robertson recently decided to try out the Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings series and had Larry Jeffers Race Cars update it for big slicks. The chassis was stuffed with a ProCharged big-block for motivation, and Robertson drove it to the win in the Future class at the No Prep Kings Texas event. He’s making exhibition passes this weekend along with Street Outlaws stars John Odom and Jim Howe.

LME Street King champion Kurt Anderson encountered an issue with his two-step launch control during testing on Thursday. We caught up with the Wisconsin native as he was exploring the underside of his dashboard for the issue. He seemed to have found it by the time we left his pit and he should be ready to take on the Street King and Open Comp competition today.

TorqStorm Superchargers co-owner Scott Oshinski has his Oldsmobile Cutlass back in action here at the Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival presented by TorqStorm Superchargers. On Thursday, Oshinski clicked off an easy 8.67 with his Steve Morris Engines-powered Olds, and decided to add a bit more timing in for the second pass, which resulted in a wild wheelstand.

Stephen Barnett made the trek from his home in Royse City, Texas, near Dallas to US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan. Barnett normally competes in the 9-race Texas 275 series, and a win at the April event netted him valuable RTRA championship points. Currently sitting in top three, Barnett fired up his 440ci, BES Racing Engines-built, Haltech fuel injected and ProCharged small-block in his Mustang to make an A-B pass on Thursday, and will have another test shot on Friday before going into Q1.

New to the NMCA is Tom Ladisky and his Jerry Bickel-built Mustang Pro Mod. The car was previously campaigned by Dan Millen in Pro Extreme and Ladisky has since equipped it with a Brad Anderson Enterprises Hemi with a C-rotor screw blower. It’s backed by a Liberty’s Gears four-speed transmission with Bruno drive and Ladisky has run a best of 3.73 with it. He’s hoping to improve on his 3.88 that he posted during Thursday’s test session.

Kurt Neighbor is playing a bit of musical cars this weekend, as his SVO Mustang is currently awaiting a new engine. With that, he’s pressed his 1964 Thunderbolt into service for Super Stock this weekend, and will be driving his crazy Mercury Comet in Nostalgia Super Stock.

Lindsay Wheelock, who competes in the Holley EFI Factory Super Cars category with the Alsop Racing Drag Pak Challenger, was planning on driving Jason Lee’s Mustang in Xtreme Street, but her husband Dustin has since stepped in to shake down the car as it has been having a few issues this weekend.

Former NMCA Xtreme Pro Mod champion Don Walsh has been helping out X275 racer Steve Halprin with his Mustang over the last couple of years, but Walsh just couldn’t stay out from behind the wheel. He picked up a Fox-body Mustang coupe from JE Fabrications’ Jason Eberly last year, but business kept him from working on and racing it until this year. Walsh bought the car as a roller, thinking he would put a small-block Ford under the hood, but parts delays had him track down the LSX powerplant that Eberly had built for it. Said engine is a 434ci DiSomma Racing Engines built bullet with Energy Manufacturing heads, boosted by a Precision 88mm turbo and run by a FuelTech FT600 EFI system. Walsh plans to take advantage of having essentially a two-car team to compare data and improve performance.
