Saturday Coverage 19th Annual Nitrous Supply NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance

Posted By: Event Coverage Team
The action was nonstop morning, noon and night for Friday's running of the 19th Annual Nitrous Supply NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana. Temperatures and elapsed-times dropped at about the same time, and the result was really quick and fast qualifying across the categories. Making a bullet of a pass was Eric Gustafson, who lit the board with a 3.68 and 204 mph to set the pace in the second round of VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod qualifying. Other lead qualifiers included Bill Skillman, who blasted to a 7.58 in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars, Tony Gillig, who gunned to a 4.42 in ARP Nitrous Pro Street, Rich Nye, with a 7.78 in Dart NA 10.5 presented by Diamond Pistons and Brian Keep, with a 4.65 in Edelbrock Xtreme Street, among others.

Quick Fuel Technology Nostalgia Super Stock racers have kicked off today's running of the 19th Annual Nitrous Supply NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance at Lucas Oil Raceway. Here's what else is on tap. The Dave Duell Nostalgia Super Stock Classic is a very special component of this event. Named in memory and in honor of fellow racer and father of Quick Fuel Technology Nostalgia Super Stock/Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo driver Doug Duell, it welcomes some of the toughest racers across the country, in some of the coolest cars across the country. It was contested last night, and Brent Wheeler won in the Indy Cylinder Head FX Shootout in his Coronet, while John Hamer won in A Class in his Barracuda, Kevin Miller won in B Class in his Coronet and Robert Westhoff won in C Class in his Galaxie. "We were very fortunate," said Wheeler, whose Coronet is pictured above. "Things seemed to come together and go our way." [gallery size="full" ids="18937,18936,18935"] Jordan Bucciere, who has competed in Brackets and Open Comp at Milan Dragway in Michigan for many years, decided to move over to Motor City Muscle Challenge three years ago, as she wanted to give naturally aspirated, small tire heads-up racing a try, and by all accounts, it was a good move. She earned the championship in the category last year in her 1972 Nova powered by a 565 cubic-inch Chevrolet engine, and wanted to defend it this year, but had to have surgery on her back and couldn't climb into her car until recently. This marks her return to Motor City Muscle, and she's picking up right where she left off, as she's currently qualified in the second spot with a 9.12 with help from her father and crew chief, Frank Bucciere. On more than one occasion, VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod driver Mike DiDomenico has said that he doesn't give up easily, and neither does his crew, including his son and crew chief, Sal DiDomenico, and Adam Stablein, Gary Lucas and Blake Molnar, and they proved that yesterday. DiDomenico, who was already qualified in the third spot with an impressive 3.74 and 195 mph, was trying to back that up in the second round of qualifying when he lost oil pressure in his beastly Brad Anderson Hemi prepared by Rage Fuel Systems. He clicked it off and he and his crew returned to their pit area to do a deep dive to discover the issue, and by 2 a.m., they had restored oil pressure. After just a few hours of sleep followed by a quick stop at Dunkin Donuts they changed the rear-end under the car, and moments ago, DiDomenico ripped off a 3.75 in the third round of qualifying, putting him in the fifth spot, showing the team's commitment. Greg Collins, who regularly races in NMRA Detroit Locker Truck and Lightning and finished ninth in the category last year, is racing in NMCA MagnaFuel Open Comp this weekend. When we walked by his pit area yesterday, the Centerburg, Ohio-based driver, along with fellow drivers Jeff Toepper, Bryan Parker and Jerry Stamps, were taking a close look at the battery and the connection in the back of his Ranger powered by a small-block Ford built by Bryan Parker, as Collins lost fire just before the first round of qualifying. We were happy to see the truck ready to go this morning, with a fresh set of battery terminals, and a happy Collins told us that all was well, and that he had run an 11.74 and recorded an .079 to qualify in the thirty-fourth spot in the second round of qualifying today. Tripp Carter, pictured with his girlfriend, Wanda Hunsucker, came to this event with the lead in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars points, and considering the level of competition in the category, he's well aware that it will take everything he has and then some to keep it. Carter, who's currently qualified in the fourth spot with a 7.69 from his Mustang Cobra Jet built by Watson Racing, powered by a Coyote engine and Whipple supercharger and tuned by Kim Mapes, said he has had some issues as of late, but he believes those issues have been tracked down, and he's hoping to run even faster in tonight's final round of qualifying. Tim Rickey, who usually competes in MagnaFuel Open Comp and Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series Proform Rumble in his 2006 Corvette, is running his 1963 Corvette in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod at this event. The beauty built by Advance Chassis boasts a nitrous-enhanced 565 cubic-inch engine by Performance Clinic, and Rickey, who broke his back four years ago in a very bad on-track wreck in his previous 1963 Corvette, has been taking his time tuning and dialing-in the car, which will also see Quick 8 and NHRA Top Sportsman action. The Ohioan has qualified for eliminations. Kenton Thomas of nearby Danville, Illinois, pilots this 2001 Chevy 2500HD Silverado and while some may think it's a turbo diesel, it's actually a turbo 6.0-liter gas engine that burns E85. The Borg Warner S480 turbocharger easily dwarfs the Duramax unit and the quarter-mile performance is way better, too. Thomas has entered his rig in the Proform Rumble category and has been dialing back the truck's 10.80 capability to around 11.00 to run the index class. He and his crew chief Zach Rogers could end up being spoilers in the championship as the pickup has proven to be a rather consistent performer. Tony The Sandman Williams brought his gorgeous 1969 Camaro out to Indianapolis to compete in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod. The Millington, Tennessee based team struggled in the first two sessions, but Williams thinks he has a handle on the car and is ready for Q3. Whatever your opinion of Third-Gen F-Bodies may be, James Benge's 1991 Camaro is a stunning example of what they can be. Benge bought the Z28 about 6 years ago and has been modifying the L98 TPI machine ever since. It now sports a variety of aftermarket suspension components, a Strange Engineering 12-bolt reared, and a 435rwhp LS1/4L60E swap that propels it to mid 11s in the quarter-mile, while pulling down a comfortable 20 mpg when cruising.   While we were talking with Tim Rickey for an earlier post, we also caught up with his son, David Rickey, the 2019 Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series Proform Rumble champion. David is pulling double duty this weekend, as he's competing in MagnaFuel Open Comp and Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series Proform Rumble. He had a bit of trouble when the antitheft system on his Camaro became engaged and prevented him from starting his car when he was in the lanes for the first round of qualifying for MagnaFuel Open Comp, but he had the car towed back to the pit area, bypassed the antitheft system and he's ready to chase season championships in both categories.
