Yesterday's test session was merely a teaser for what's to come at this weekend's 16th Annual SDPC Raceshop NMCA World Street Finals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana. As the final points race in the series' 2017 season, drivers will be giving it everything they have and then some to go rounds as points standings and championships are on the line. To see where drivers are currently positioned in points, please click HERE. To read a story about the chase to the championship in the series' quickest and fastest category, VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod, please click HERE Drivers of Detroit TrueTrac Nostalgia Muscle Car will be the first to pull their cars under the famous Lucas Oil Raceway arch and power down track beginning at 10 a.m. Testing is scheduled make way for the first round of qualifying at 2:30 p.m. Thursday night here at the final Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series event of the year plays host to the LSX Racers Appreciation Party. Guest speakers from both Chevrolet Performance and Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center were on hand, and the NMCA staff gave away over $15,000 in prizes. While we hadn't seen much of ATI Performance Products Nostalgia Super Stock driver Jeff Frees and his 1964 Belvedere since his fifth place finish in points last year, he's back in action at this event, and he has with him a fine excuse for his absence. It's the 1968 'Cuda he purchased from Mike Sanders a few years ago, and it's wearing fresh black paint applied by Northshore Auto Body and Trailer in Wisconsin. A peek under the hood reveals a Goodwin Competition-built 572ci Wedge engine, which helped him achieve 9.40s in testing yesterday, and while he'll enter the category's 9.50 index this weekend, he'll'soon replace the 572ci Wedge engine with a Goodwin Competition-built 598ci Wedge engine and move to the category's 8.50 index. Frees is poised to get a lot of seat time in his new ride this weekend, as he's entered in the Victory Nostalgia Super Stock finals based on his fifth place finish in points last year. Jeff Rudolf is back in action after burning up the number two piston in and subsequently making repairs to the nitrous-enhanced 521ci engine under the hood of his Nova, Rudolf's Sleigh, at the race in Ohio last month. It's a good thing, as he's currently in second place in ARP Nitrous Pro Street points and has his sights set on moving up. Tim Frees, brother of Jeff Frees, whom we mentioned above, had just swapped a leaky intake with an Indy Cylinder Head intake on the 498ci Mopar under the hood of his 1963 Plymouth Savoy when we happened by his pit area, and is now ready to roll in the 10.50 index of ATI Performance Products Nostalgia Super Stock. While Aaron Glaser had been running his 1969 Camaro in Top Sportsman at races across the country, he readied it for Pro Mod competition recently and headed to a PDRA event, where he entered Top Sportsman to dial it in, but he ended up winning with a mix of consistency and low 3.90s from the car packing an Albert Racing Engines-built 903ci Wedge and a SpeedTech nitrous system. This weekend, he's debuting the car in VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod and is ready to see what he can unleash in the cruiser with the colorful paint applied by Glaser's Collision Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Fresh on the Edelbrock Xtreme Street scene is Isaac Reed of Columbus, Indiana. His beautiful 1998 Camaro was painted by Brad Buck, the chassis was done by Burkhart, and the engine is a single 76mm Precision turbocharged, 427ci LS powerplant based on a Dart LSNext block and All Pro cylinder heads. Carlyle Racing handled the engine build and Patrick Barnhill of PTP Racing has been brought on board to tune the Steve Summers-installed Haltech EFI system. We caught the team conducting a suspension conference, as the F-body has had a wheelie problem since its debut at LS Fest a couple of weeks ago, and yanked the wheels twice during its first hit down the Lucas Oil Raceway surface during testing yesterday. They are looking to adjust the torque arm suspension and Menscer Motorsports shocks, and possibly lower the car as well. Having heard about all of the fun the FSC Stock/Super Stock Combo racers have been having this season with the NMCA, Brian Livengood of Plainfield, Indiana, arrived this morning and plans to mix it up with his B/SA 69 Camaro 396. Livengood has had the car for 40 years and drove it to high school long before it saw the track. Hicksville, Ohio's Scott Conley is competing in two classes this weekend, He'll be mixing it up with the Nostalgia Super Stock crowd with his Mopar, and he's entered in MagnaFuel Open Comp with his 1988 Iroc-Z Camaro. Conley has owned the car for 30 years, and most recently, the tube-chassis machine was powered by a Domninator-carb'd 502 big-block, but Conley opted to go a bit more modern with a 6.0-liter LS engine combination boosted by twin turbochargers. Conley says the engine makes around 1,300 horsepower and he has Xtreme Street racer Jessie Coulter handling the tuning on the Holley EFI. Paul Roderick is coming off a rather successful weekend at the NMCA All-American Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, having taken the win in the Cobra Jet shootout there with his 2013 CJ. This weekend, he brought out his new S550 CJ, which clocked an 8.30 during testing in yesterday's hot and soupy atmospheric conditions. Donny and Danny Ostgen of Michigan are here racing with the Vince Khoury crew, having brought their 1969 Camaro to compete in Boninfante Racing NA 10.5. The brothers, and former Fastest Street Car Shootout competitors, have worked with Vince Khoury on the 605ci big-block Chevy powerplant, which wears Reher-Morrison Raptor cylinder heads, and the combination has powered the Camaro to a 7.99 recently, though at a curb weight 151 lbs lighter than what they are required to run at in the NMCA. "Crazyman" Roger Wellman of Galion, Ohio, regularly runs Top Sportsman with his 1997 Ford Probe. The chassis was built by Tom Yancer and it has been stuffed with a 632-cube Chevy with two nitrous oxide systems from Induction Solutions. Crazyman has run a best of 7.17 at 194 and is looking forward to trying out the NMCA for the first time. Defending NA 10.5 champion Mike DeMayo is back in action here in Indianapolis after he and his crew chief and engine builder Gaby Labiosa both had to take a medical hiatus for most of this year. DeMayo mentioned that they are building a second small-block to be able to run some X275 races as well. After winning the Fastest Street Car Top Sportsman Shootout at the race in Ohio last month, Dave Granger is gunning for a return to the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle at this weekend's event. Up to the task is his 1951 Henry J and its nitrous-loving 565ci engine topped with ProFiler heads, and when we stopped by Granger's pit area, he shared that he's changing spark plugs and adjusting the floats in his QuickFuel carburetors, and will be ready for today's first round of qualifying. In his 1990 Ford Mustang powered by a 427ci LS Chevrolet engine on nitrous, Mike Duke of Mike Duke Racing is running the Chevrolet Performance Challenger Series Holley EFI Real Street this weekend, thanks to a rules change for the class that allows for any vehicle body provide it is LS- or LT-powered. Duke, who uses what he learns about his combinations to guide his customers, said the car would likely run 5.0s in ideal conditions, and 5.30s in this weekend's very hot and humid conditions. While Randy Eakins had been running his 2010 Challenger DragPak in Fastest Street Car Stock/Super Stock, he's been testing his new 2016 Cobra Jet in the past month and debuted it in the Holley EFI Factory Super Cars category this weekend. The stunning car is powered by a 302ci engine made even beefier with a 2.9 Whipple supercharger, and while Eakins is anxious to see what it will do, he's struggling with what he thinks is a transmission or converter issue, which is causing him to post 8.90s rather than the 8.30s he thinks he should be running. Brothers Chris and Jeff Harrington have been hauling to personal bests left and right in the Mustang they take turns driving. Chris' came in the form of a 4.04 at the NMCA event at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio in August, while Jeff's came in the form of a 4.05, and a car best of 194.69 mph, at the Shakedown at the Summit, also at Summit Motorsports Park, last weekend. Among the contributing factors are their 430ci small-block Ford engine and 88mm Garrett GTX-5018R turbos, and the fact that they added weight bars to the front of car to help control the wicked wheelies it had been going into. According to Chris, who's piloting the car in Mickey Thompson Radial Wars this weekend, the car may have 3.90s with some additional tuning. "We can tell by looking at the back-half numbers that it has more in it, and we're working to bring it all together," said Chris. For a recent story about the Harringtons and their Mustang, please click HERE ATI Performance Products Nostalgia Super Stock driver Scott Conley is back in NMCA competition after a few years off due to health issues, and is working to dial in the 512ci Wedge engine under the hood of his 1964 Belvedere for the 10.50 index. "I went 10.61 on my first pass this afternoon, and even though it's taking me some time to get used to being in the driver's seat again, I'll get it," said Conley, who's celebrating 24 years of marriage to his wife, Lori, today.
