The 8th Annual Borla Exhaust NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by Miller Welders has kicked off here in Commerce, Georgia, at Atlanta Dragway. The weather is looking great this weekend and the relatively cool temperatures should promote some quick elapsed times throughout the weekend. Cars are getting teched in today and then Friday will usher in the first two rounds of qualifying. In addition to the top notch talent in the normal NMCA class lineup, this event will also play host to the Open Comp Shootout, which will pit cars from both NMCA and NMRA Open Comp classes against each other. For the first time ever, we'll also see the Sealed Stock Manufacturer's Cup, which will pair up the NMCA's Chevrolet Performance Stock racers again the NMRA's Race Pages Coyote Stock contingent. This will be a heads-up eliminator to see which manufacturer has the baddest crate-motor-powered machine.
We spotted Don Bowles championship-winning NMRA Hot Street Maverick in the pits early today and after some investigation, we've come to find out that Don's grandson, Cameron Bowles, will be in the driver's seat this weekend and competing in Bracket 2 the weekend. The Maverick is still in Hot Street trim, although they have pulled the tuneup back on the car as this is Cameron's first event with a relatively fast car. They are expecting to run 11.50s this weekend, though Cameron will be getting his competition license this weekend. During some testing on Monday-tuesday of this week, Cameron got some one-on-one instruction from veteran driver Kurt Neighbor, and Cameron's father, Donnie Bowles who will also be running this weekend'says he's picked everything up very quickly. Did we mention Cameron will be turning 18 next month Sounds like a pretty cool early birthday present.
Many racers take advantage of early Thursday parking to get a great spot in the pits and take care of any maintenance they might have to do before the race begins. VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod driver Adam Flamholc and his team were performing routine maintenance on his blown Hemi-powered Corvette. As easy as one might expect it to be to work on a car with a removable front end, picking up 70-plus pounds of supercharger and intake manifold and setting it down over the studs is still quite the exercise. Some racers use a hoist to accomplish this, and some find other ways of solving engineering challenges such as this that are just as effective.
Racers are able to pre-order their fuel from VP Racing Fuels, which then delivers it to the track to be picked up. Racers can also purchase fuel from the delivery truck should they not have had the chance to order area of time.
Brand new to the Chevrolet Performance Stock ranks is Haley Rounsavall, who will be piloting her grandfather's former Proform Rumble Camaro that has been stuffed with the CP Stock class-spec DR525 sealed crate engine. Haley's grandfather just happens to be the Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series CP Stock champion Ronnie Hackelton, and it would seem he has his work cut out for him as Haley's ride has already run faster than his own CRC COPO Camaro entry in testing.
