Shawn Ayers Soars to NMCA Vortech Street Outlaw Championship in Fletcher Cox's Gold Dust Mustang

Posted By: Mike Galimi
From the moment Shawn Ayers and Fletcher Cox rolled Cox's Gold Dust Mustang out of the trailer at the 16th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem in March at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, they had everyone's attention. As it turned out, it was for good reason, as Ayers drove the Philadelphia Eagles player's car to a 4.42 to qualify in the third spot and then a 4.33 against Daniel Pharris to head to the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle. He picked up to a 4.30 in the fan-favorite car to qualify in the second spot and picked up again to a 4.24 against Andy Manson to win at the 10th Annual NMCA/NMRA All-Star Nationals in April at Atlanta Dragway, and he followed that with a 4.32 to lead qualifying and a 4.58 to runner-up against Pharris at the 17th Annual Quick Fuel Technology Bluegrass Nationals in May at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky. On a roll, Ayers wheeled Cox's car to a 4.29 to set the pace in qualifying and then a 4.31 against Pharris to win at the 13th Annual Nitto NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in July at Route 66 Raceway in Illinois, and then a 4.32 to qualify in the third spot at the 17th Annual Honeywell Garrett NMCA All-American Nationals in August at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio. For a grand finale, he flew to a 4.30 to qualify in the second spot, posted a 4.48 to runner-up against Rob Goss and clenched the 2018 NMCA Vortech Street Outlaw championship at the NMCA World Street Finals in September at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana. Ayers, Cox, their crew and all of their accomplishments will be celebrated at the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals presented by E3 Spark Plugs Awards Ceremony presented by Aerospace Components, Dec. 7 at the Indiana Convention Center.
