Jordan Pennington brought a new ride out to compete in the National Parts Depot F.A.S.T. presented by Horsepower Depot this weekend. Built in 34 days just a couple of months back, this 1967 Corvette hadn’t seen track action until today. Originally the Pennington family bought the car with the intent of restoring it, but they decided not to let it gather dust. Instead, they put all their Corvette racing knowledge into the build and powered the car with a 560-cube Chevy big-block built by Bischoff and backed by a Dan Sharp-prepped Turbo 400 trans and a Drag Vette 12-bolt rearend. In testing before the event, it ran a 9.34 at 137 mph, and Pennington thinks the fresh racer might have a chance at setting a class record this weekend at his home track.
Jim Burr and his girlfriend Teresa Corner are on the property and having fun in the Dodge // Mopar Hemi Shootout class this weekend at US 131 Motorsports Park. Burr is piloting this daily driver, a silver 2015 Hellcat Challenger, which features a rare list of options and a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger underhood. It runs low-9-second passes despite clocking in at 4,700 pounds. Burr hopes to get drafted into Sunday’s HHP Racing Hemi Quick 8 class. Conner meanwhile turned his keys over to Jim Burr Sr. who is gunning for the 14-second title in her daily driver, a 2018 Challenger RT.
Craig Blossom brought out an assortment of fast Hemi machines to play in the Dodge // Mopar Hemi Shootout. You could say he has a thing for modern Mopars, as he owns several, including two Hellcats, two Demons, a Redeye, and more. Eventually, he hopes to own eight of them, but thus far this blue 2016 Hellcat is his favorite. Tuned by Daniel Cox at DCR Racing, whom Blossom credits for the success of his car, it runs a smaller upper pulley and E85 to make 9.6-second passes. Blossom survived five heart attacks, 17 stints, and a quadruple bypass, so he is committed to living life to the fullest.
It was quite an adventure for LME Street King racer Kurt Anderson to make it to the TorqStorm Superchargers NMRA/NMCA Power Festival Presented by Paul's High Performance this weekend. He and his wife Shawna opted to fly down to Texas to pick up a new RV. They drove 16 hours from south of Dallas to Illinois to meet Al Corda, who was nice enough to haul their race trailer there so they could pick it up on the way to the track. After another four hours, they arrived at US 131 Motorsports Park. When we caught up with him, Anderson was trying a different fuel to get his Camaro to run the number he wanted.
Defending ARP Nitrous Pro Street champion David Fallon Jr. is feeling confident this weekend riding the momentum of a win at an Import vs. Domestic race at this track a couple of weeks ago. He and his team swapped converters between test sessions on Thursday in search of the right setup before moving on to tuning and gear changes to optimize the car for the conditions this weekend. He says the car should run low .20s, but he doesn’t want to push it too hard.
Anthony Bongiovanni is running for the first time this season in the Micro Strategies Stock Eliminator class that is sponsored by his company. He didn’t miss a beat in qualifying as he cut a .001 light in his Mustang Cobra Jet and ran an 8.78 in the first round of qualifying.
Allen Hurley’s 1967 Ford Fairlane was already flying in TorqStorm Superchargers True Street, but he recently made some upgrades to push its performance even higher. The car is powered by a Coyote 5.0-liter boosted by a Hellion twin-turbo system. He recently swapped out the snails for a pair of Hellion’s latest 74-76 designed by John Urist himself. On the dyno, the turbos yielded 3-5 pounds of additional boost, which helped push him to an impressive run of three 7-second passes in competition.
The BIGFOOT Monster Truck is holding court next to the US 131 Motorsports Park track this weekend, which makes for the perfect photo opportunity.
