While rain fell most of the morning on Friday, the track team worked diligently to dry it so that racing could resume for the Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Force Engineering at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park. It was well worth the effort, for everyone, as racers poured on the power for an all-around incredible first round of qualifying. Soon after the final pair of cars went down track last night, there was rain, thunder, lightning and then a power outage, and while the NMCA, NMRA and racers were ready to fire up the generators to forge ahead, the power was restored as NMRA ARP Open Comp pulled into the burnout out.
The on-track action was intense and incredible for the first round of qualifying yesterday, with Jim Widener driving to a 3.75 to set the pace in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod, and Dom DiDonato, pictured, driving to a 4.41 to set the pace in Mickey Thompson Tires/VP Racing Madditives Street Outlaw, and so much more. With much better weather conditions sunny, dry and a high of 75 on tap for today, we're sure to see even quicker and faster elapsed-times from racers, who have just this event, and the 19th Annual Nitrous Supply NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance, Sept. 24-27 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana, to chase championships and top ten finishes in points. Ryan Hill debuted his new 1963 Corvette-bodied car built by Chris Duncan Race Cars at the Nitto Tire NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by HPJ Performance last month at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, and was very pleased with the performance of the car featuring a 521 cubic-inch Brad Anderson Enterprises Hemi, 1471 Roots supercharger and three-speed Lenco. He ripped off a 4.04 at that event, and last night at the Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Force Engineering at US 131 Motorsports Park, he picked up to a 4.01 and is currently qualified in the tenth spot in the full field of 16 cars. We made a couple of gear changes in the transmission because we didn't like how far down the track it was shifting, and we really can't complain about how things are going with the new car, said Hill, whose car is nicknamed Betty White and rocks a picture of the actress in the cockpit. We hope to get into the 3.80s soon. We have the right crew to make that happen.
Sam Monteleone is motoring in Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo and the Ford Performance Cobra Jet Showdown presented by Watson Racing, and he and his 2013 Mustang Cobra are up to the challenge. It's powered by a 5.0L Coyote engine and a Whipple supercharger, which Jason Lee and Patrick Barnhill of PTP Racing help him and his crew chief Anthony Thompson tune with Big Stuff 3. In Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo, he's currently qualified in the seventeenth spot with a 8.89 on a 9.95 index, and in Ford Performance Cobra Jet Showdown presented by Watson Racing, he's currently qualified in the sixth spot with an 8.93. With the new tune that PTP Racing gave us, we should pick up as the weather gets better this weekend, said Monteleone.
Jesse Alexandra, also known as Batman, regularly races in NHRA Factory Stock Showdown, but he's racing in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars this weekend. He's currently qualified in the eleventh spot after stopping the clocks at 8.06 in qualifying in his 2020 COPO Camaro sporting Batman vinyl. We caught up with his tuner, Travis Hilger, as he was using Holley EFI to lay a tune on the combination consisting of a 350 cubic-inch engine and a Magnuson supercharger, and he told us that the hot and humid conditions early in the weekend were making it a bit more challenging for the car to crank out the kind of elapsed-time it's capable of, but he was confident cooler temperatures today and tomorrow will give them a boost.
ARP Nitrous Pro Street driver Kyle Salminen, who will be featured in a Spotlight interview in an upcoming issue of Fastest Street Car magazine, is running a cool new scoop on top of his 632 cubic-inch Chevrolet engine built by Nelson Competition, topped with two Quick Fuel Technology carburetors and enhanced by an Induction Solutions nitrous system at the Arrington Performance / ShopHemi.com NMRA/NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Force Engineering this weekend at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park. The Floridian said his father and car owner, Matt Salminen, was seeking a new look for the car which is already a fan-favorite at the races, and as a bonus, Kyle, who's currently qualifed in the seventh spot with a 4.58, said he can see around this scoop a bit better than he could see around the previous one.
Fresh off a trip to the Aerospace Components Inc. Winner's Circle at the NMCA/NMRA event at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois last month, MagnaFuel Products Inc. Open Comp racer Cameron Bowles is hoping to back it up at the Arrington Performance / ShopHemi.com NMRA/NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Force Engineering this weekend at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in his grandfather Don Bowles' Maverick powered by a small-block Ford built by Roush and freshened by Phillip Oakley. He's off to a good start, as he recorded a .003 reaction time to lead qualifying, and he hopes to hold onto that lead in tonight's final round of qualifying and win the race. A look at the qualifying sheet for the category, chock-full of very competitive reaction times and elapsed-times, indicates that he'll have his work cut out for him when eliminations roll around, but when we caught up with him in the pit area, he told us that he's ready.
