Saturday Coverage | 22nd Annual Red Line Synthetic Oil NMCA World Finals Presented by Chevrolet Performance
Some of the quickest and fastest cars in the country have arrived for the 22nd Annual NMCA World Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance. Cool Indiana weather will had racers running quick as they compete on the famed drag strip. Race fans will enjoy all the NMCA championship classes, plus the Dodge // Mopar HEMI Shootout and an incredible Stock/Super Stock show. With just 17 points separating the top two contenders heading into Indianapolis, the battle for the championship in the Micro Strategies Super Stock class was easily the closest of any in the Red Line Synthetic Oil NMCA Drag Racing Series. Reigning champ Mark Nowicki came to Indy as the championship leader with 1979 NHRA champion Amy Faulk in hot pursuit. Nowicki, who kicked off the season with a runner-up finish in Orlando, has extended that lead to 32 after qualifying which means that Faulk will need to advance one round further during final eliminations in order to claim the title. Augustus Adkins and Dennis Breeden, who came into the race third and fourth in the standings, are still in the running although both are now three rounds behind Nowicki.
Ray Nash is quick to point out that his name does not appear anywhere on the 2021 Dodge Drag Pack Challenger that he races in the Holley EFI Factory Super Car class. Instead, the car called “Underdawg” is simply labeled as Nash Family Racing. That’s because the team effort not only includes Nash, but also his wife, Christina, sons, Zachary and Dominic, father, Brian, and Karen Hill.
Nash opened qualifying in Indy with a 7.914, and while not his quickest run, it was enough to lead the field as many other drivers struggled to gain traction in the mid-day heat.
“We came here to try a few things out and while I’m mindful of our qualifying position, I’m not ultra-concerned because we know the rest of the field will catch up. This is just our first full season out here and we’re trying to get a handle on a hot weather tune-up.”
Nash has run a best of 7.77 in his Dodge, which features a Gen III Hemi built by Kim and Kimmy Maples. So far this year, Nash has been able to consistently win the first round, but now he’s looking to take the next step.
“We’ve made a lot of progress and won a few rounds, but it probably takes three years to really get a handle on this class,” Nash said. “I beat [world champion] David Barton at the NHRA race in Norwalk and that shows a lot of progress. For me, the big thing is being able to do this as a family. That’s the most important part.”
