While it seemed that Adam Flamholc escaped injury when he wrecked in his 1963 Corvette last July, he was later diagnosed with a health concern believed to be related to the wreck's fierce force.
It was serious enough to sideline the diehard driver who was leading NMCA VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod points going into the final race of the season, the 16th Annual SDPC Raceshop NMCA World Street Finals in September at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana, and he was forced to watch from his home in Sweden as his friend and fellow driver Steve Summers went on to capture the 2017 class championship.
My normal life goes in high speed, with work, working out, traveling all over Europe, Russia and the U.S. racing, but it had an abrupt stop after the crash, said Flamholc, who was among the nominees for 2017 NMCA Driver of the Year and whose wreck was included in a compilation video shown at the NMCA Awards Ceremony presented by Aerospace Components in December in Indiana. The only good thing about the last four months is that I was able to spend a lot of time with my family.
Certain that he would eventually rebound and return to racing, Flamholc, whose 1963 Corvette was heavily damaged from the firewall forward, hired Chris Duncan Race Cars to help him create an even better 1963 Corvette.
Our first plan was to front-half it and get a new nose for it, but after we took it apart, we found some cracked tubes around the 4-link and the body was cracked and in pretty bad shape, said Flamholc. So, Chris (Duncan) and I decided to get a new carbon body and basically build a new car.
It will come to life with a Hameetman Racing Engines-built 526ci Hemi engine topped with a Mike Janis-massaged roots-style supercharger, and a Bruno converter drive with a Lenco Racing CS2 transmission will help put the gargantuan amounts of power to the ground.
Hameetman Racing Engines is the place that I will work at when I'm over here in the United States, said Flamholc. They're very talented people.
Flamholc plans to have the car running by the end of January and then really revved up for the NMCA season-opener, the 16th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem, March 8-11, Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida. He also plans to take part in the remaining five events on the 2018 NMCA tour, and likely some other races.
It will probably take a couple of runs to get it running right, but I'm sure it will be as good or better than the old 63, said Flamholc. I can't wait. This will probably be the longest break I've had from racing in 10 years. It's been a tough couple of months for me, but I'm finally starting to feel better and get my strength back.
