Written By Steve Baur Photography by the Author Necessity is the mother of all invention, and FFP Customs Ryan Frazier realized he needed to build a product aid in the fitment of drivers who were purchasing his roll cages. When I got started on my own business, I was going to build and sell a rolling chassis, Frazier recalled. If I built a cage, they might not fit the car, so I started looking at pieces inside so that the car could fit anyone. And just for that reason, most everything I have made since is adjustable. That thought process lead to the development of the FFP Customs patent-pending, Adjustable Pedal Assembly. In addition to offering adjustable upper and lower seat mounts, Frazier went a step further to design his own pedal assembly to resolve any driver fitment issues. In any racing application, driver safety is the most important part of the car. I also think it's the most overlooked, Frazier said. If you're safely positioned in the car, you'll be able to focus more on driving the car. Starting with an automatic setup with just throttle and brake pedals, Frazier engineered the assembly to offer forward/backward movement of each pedal, as well as adjustable placement of the foot pads. Placing the driver in a particular place in the vehicle not only provides added comfort important for a racer to be comfortable in the car and able to concentrate on racing but it can also offer safety and weight balance benefits as well. Frazier began his quest for proper pedal position in the Fox-Body Mustang platform, and currently FFP offers an assembly for that model, as well as the newer SN95 Mustangs. When designing this kit, I placed the seat as far back as the seat would go. Me being 6 2 , it allowed me to be comfortable and safe inside the car and roll cage, Frazier said. I also had my wife, who is 5 2, sit in the same seat position. This pedal system allowed her to remain in the same position of safety within the roll cage. This allowed us both to drive the car, but I am not crazy enough to let her drive my car. Nearly the entire pedal assembly is fabricated from T-6061 aluminum to provide great strength at a lighter weight than factory components that are often made from stamped steel. To simplify installation, Frazier engineered the assembly to utilize factory mounting points, which also eliminates any fabrication work or welding. For the hydraulics, Frazier turned to Wilwood Engineering, and includes several of the company's components with his pedal assembly. The Wilwood master cylinder is bolted to the assembly, and Frazier engineered the setup so that the reservoirs can be tucked away inside the vehicle, providing additional room in the engine bay for other components, ease of maintenance, or even just a cleaner look under the hood. Frazier also offers a roll bar mount to secure the reservoirs should that placement be optimal for your application. And you can also opt to split where you mount them as well, as you can see in the application pictured here. Electrical integration options include a micro switch on the throttle pedal, and neutral safety and throttle cut-off switches for the clutch pedal. And speaking of pedals, FFP Customs offers a few different pedal pad options as well to provide the perfect fit and feel. There's no doubt that the FFP Customs Adjustable Pedal Assembly is a trick piece. In addition to the incredible adjustability, the assembly offers on average 2-5 pounds of weight savings, and it has proven thus far to be quite durable, as Frazier said his first one is still in use in a 5.50 1/8-mile race car.
