While multi-time NMCA VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw and NMCA West ProCharger Street Outlaw champion Eric Gustafson and his crew chief, Cameron Hensley, have not campaigned a race car since 2016, their comeback is near.
As NMCA reported last March, Gustafson had a Pro Mod chassis built by Gary Naughton Race Cars and topped with a carbon fiber 1969 Camaro body by Cynergy Composites.
The car, which is now at 2017 NMCA VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod champion Steve Summers shop for wiring and finishing touches, will scoot with a 526ci Brad Anderson Enterprises Hemi fronted by a ProCharger F-3X-143 while rolling on a Mark Williams Enterprises rear-end, Strange Engineering suspension components, struts and shocks by Adam Lambert at Precision Racing Suspension and Weld wheels wrapped with Hoosier tires.
Gustafson plans to focus on NMCA VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod, but will run Radial vs. the World at select events in the car which will soon be wrapped by Sticker Dude.
The Camaro is very close to being done, and we're very eager to start testing with it, said Gustafson, of Manhattan Beach, California. We certainly want to race a full season in 2018, and we certainly want to do very well and earn another championship.
As though that car wasn't going to bring enough heat, Gustafson also will have in his trailer his famously fast 1989 Mustang, which he or Hensley will drive in NMCA or NMRA VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw at select events. The car is currently at Lyons Custom Motorsports, where it's receiving chassis upgrades, and while it had previously boasted an LS engine, it will now be powered by a Pettis Performance-built small-block Ford fronted alternately by a ProCharger supercharger or a Precision turbo. The car with Racecraft suspension components will pound pavement with Mickey Thompson 275 radials wrapped around Weld wheels.
We want to have that car set up to run either a blower or turbo because having options is good, said Gustafson.
Jason Lee and Patrick Barnhill of PTP Racing will continue to concoct the tunes for Gustafson's cars, and John Urgo will continue to drive the team's rig to the races and help work on the cars. Additional support comes from Coast Packing Company, where Gustafson is CEO; Gustafson's father, Ron Gustafson, and ProCharger.
We've definitely set the bar even higher, and we have some tricks up our sleeves, said Gustafson. We're coming to give it our full effort and to win.
