Joel Greathouse is surrounded by family, friends and fellow racers who support him and want to see him succeed.
They encourage and enhearten him, and they inspire and invigorate him, and Greathouse has made it known on more than one occasion how very much that means to him.
They were behind him every step of the way in 2022, when he took on NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street and NMRA VP Racing Madditives Renegade. This story covers his NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street season, and a separate story covers his NMRA VP Racing Madditives Renegade season.
Greathouse started his NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street championship-chase at the Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport in April at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina, where he qualified in the second spot with a 4.57 in his close friend, Jeremy Wolf’s Mustang featuring an 8.2 deck small-block Ford by Bennett Racing Engines, 76mm billet turbo by Hart’s Turbo and a Turbo 400 by RPM Transmissions. He won the first through third rounds of eliminations with a 4.61, 4.67 and 4.64 before going to the winner’s circle with a 4.61 against Becki Cram. While he was at it, he set a class record with a 4.576, and that record still stands.
He followed that with a 4.60 to set the pace in qualifying at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by Fuelab in May at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, and won the first through semifinal rounds of eliminations with a 4.62, 4.60, 4.58 and 4.59. He earned the event win with another 4.59, this time against Keith Ciborowski, in the final round of eliminations.
After pulling into Michigan for the Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival presented by TorqStorm Superchargers in July at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, Greathouse qualified in the fourth spot with 4.64 and won the first and second rounds of eliminations with a 4.62 and 4.61. With nonstop rain, the decision was made to finish the final rounds of eliminations at the NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Sick the Magazine in August at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio or the Whipple Superchargers NMRA Ford World Finals presented by Competition Clutch featuring the Holley Intergalactic Ford Festival in late September, early October at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky, and Greathouse gunned to the win for that make-up race at the NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Sick the Magazine with a 4.56 against the great Bill Trovato.For the actual NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Sick the Magazine, he led qualifying with a 4.56, won the first through semifinal rounds of eliminations with a 4.63, 4.60 and 4.62, and wrapped up his second win of the weekend with a 4.59 against Bill Trovato.
Aiming for an amazing end to the season, Greathouse arrived at a 4.52 to lead qualifying at the NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance in September at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indiana. He won the first round of eliminations with a 4.57, and recorded a 4.54 on a solo pass in the second round of eliminations. He exited eliminations after a close 4.54 to 4.55 race against Terry Wilson in the third round, but all of his hard work had paid off, as he captured the 2022 NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street championship. Additionally, he set class records at that event with a 4.521 and 158.45 mph, and those records still stand.

“We were able to maintain some consistency, we had a little luck and very fortunate is how I would describe the past five years of racing,” said Greathouse. “We have won six championships in the past five years, which is a testament to the folks who have supported us to the fullest extent possible. Justin McChesney, Ben Thomas, Jeremy Wolf and I want to thank our wives and families for letting us chase our racing dreams. Missy, Michelle, Buffy and Tiffany have supported us along the way, and our kids have enjoyed tagging along as well. We also get amazing support from our KBX Team. We have developed lifelong friendships with John Kolivas, Jon Bennett, and others, and their support this year is unmatched. None of this year could have been accomplished without the car owner and true friend, Jeremy Wolf, giving us the opportunity.”
