After a great day of testing on Thursday capped off by some relaxing good times at the Weldon Racer Appreciation Party, the racing action heats up today as the morning test runs roll into qualifying hits across the Redline NMCA Muscle Car Nationals heads-up and index classes, as well as specialty categories like the Great Lakes Stock/Super Stock Classic and the two National Parts Depot Factory Appearing Stock Tire presented by Cor-A-Vent classes.

With just two more races left on the NMCA schedule, racers are not only vying for victory this weekend but for precious points to make moves in the season standings. Records and round wins will help that cause, but qualifying in a good spot is an important part of that equation, so today’s two qualifiers give racers a good idea of not only the track conditions but what they need to do tomorrow as qualifying runs give way to those important eliminations rounds.

Running with NMCA for the first time with a brand-new ’69 Camaro racer in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod, Jay Santos made his first test hit in the car this weekend and he hopes to eventually run in the 3.60 range like the rest of the class. Based on a Jerry Bickel chassis, the classic Camaro is powered by a Roots-blown Noonan engine under the control of a Fueltech engine management system. Santos had an in-car fire during his last visit to this track, but he is ready for better luck this weekend at the TorqStorm Superchargers NMRA/NMCA Power Festival Presented by Paul's High Performance.

The crew from TorqStorm Superchargers not only sponsors this race, but they get in on the fun as well, with Scott Oshinski running in the company’s namesake True Street class and Chris Brooker campaigning in LME Street King. Oshinski finally has a fully functional transmission in his Oldsmobile after hurting it in Orlando and taking it out at Rockingham, while Brooker buttoned up a troublesome alternator belt in his Camaro after the St. Louis race. Despite US 131 Motorsports Park being their home track, the duo didn’t get a chance to do any pre-race testing, so they are dialing in the cars at the race.

Five years ago, Jeff Ancil picked up this fully restored ’69 L78 Nova fully restored and headed straight to the track. He runs in the National Parts Depot Factory Appearing Stock Tire presented by Cor-A-Vent class, which is a special addition to this weekend’s festivities at the TorqStorm Superchargers NMRA/NMCA Power Festival Presented by Paul's High Performance. He plucked out the factory drivetrain and installed a built 396 big-block backed by a Turbo 400 actuated by a factory column shift. Spinning 4.30 rear gears, it runs high 11.80s on those small tires and looks great doing it.

Hailing from Canada, it takes commitment to travel deep into the US for races, but US 131 Motorsports Park is relatively close by, so it was easy for the Smokies Garage-backed '67 Mustang to make the trip down to compete in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod. With help from his longtime friend Johnny Weima and a crew that is clicking on all cylinders, the car is coming around quickly and Wildgust says it has become the best car he has ever driven. It showed in testing with a stout 3.68-second registered on the board.

Ryan Vandusen is piloting this 1967 Corvette in both National Parts Depot Factory Appearing Stock Tire presented by Cor-A-Vent and MagnaFuel Open Comp at US 131 Motorsports Park this weekend. Unearthed a year ago after being tucked away back in 2008, the Vette is powered by a 427 Tri-Power backed by a four-speed manual, it runs low 12-second runs. He says it was initially tough to transition from racing a modern car with an automatic trans, but now banging gears in the Vette comes as naturally as driving a new car.

Also part of the TorqStorm Superchargers stable is Makenna Oshinski who is also running in the TorqStorm Superchargers True Street class. Running the company’s single supercharger on this 2006 Mustang GT, she earned a win in the 13-second category at the last race and hopes to continue that momentum this weekend. Home from college for the summer, she has been daily driving this car so she is Also part of the TorqStorm Superchargers stable is Makenna Oshinski who is also running in the Torqstorm Superchargers True Street class. Running the company’s single supercharger on this 2006 Mustang GT, she earned a win in the 13-second category at the last race and hopes to continue that momentum this weekend. Home from college for the summer, she has been daily driving this car so she is comfortable behind the wheel heading into Saturday’s competition.
