Friday Coverage—Mickey Thompson NMCA All-American Nationals

Some of the quickest and fastest cars in the country have arrived for the 22nd Annual Mickey Thompson NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Sick the Mag, this weekend, August 25-27, 2023 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. While rain and flooding forced the cancellation of Friday’s test and tune session, today’s forecast looks far better and we are in for a treat on-track. In addition to all of the outstanding NMCA categories, race fans will see the Dodge // Mopar HEMI Shootout, COPO Camaro Shootout presented by COPO Parts Direct, Watson Racing Cobra Jet Showdown, NMCA vs Buckeye Stock/Super Stock All-Stars, Tom Bailey’s Sick the Mag Drive & Drive Invitational presented by Gear Vendors and more. Miicro Stategies Stock Eliminator racers had the first crack at the track surface this morning, and here is the schedule for the rest of the day.

Alan Whitaker’s stunningly gorgeous “Greenie” 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is an absolute masterpiece with 4,500 horsepower on tap. From the 23.3 SFI roll cage by Greg Risk Racecraft to the 572 ci Steve Morris Engines-built SMX twin turbo engine, the dual fuel systems to handle both street and strip use, tons of special details, and the flawless paint by Paul Winker Automotive, the Chevy could easily capture any car show prize. A build four decades in the making, as the car was Whitaker’s high school hot rod, he and his lovely fiancée, Donna, are having a blast enjoying the drag-and-drive life lately and are delighting fans this weekend in the Sick Shootout Presented by Gear Vendors.

NMCA, Total Venue Concepts and Summit Motorsports Park team members have worked incredibly hard to prepare the track after several downpours in the past few days, and it is wonderful to see cars in the lanes for today's running of the 22nd Annual Mickey Thompson NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Sick the Mag.

While we usually see Jim Johnson in NMRA ARP Open Comp, he is belting in for NMCA MagnaFuel Open Comp for this weekend’s race at Summit Motorsports Park. Johnson, who made the two-hour drive here from Michigan with his wife and crew chief, Andrea Johnson, has been running mid-9s in his Mustang GT powered by a 427 cubic-inch engine from Roush Competition Engines, and to be sure he remains competitive, he took his car to Redeye Racecars in Florida at the beginning of the race season, where NMCA Dart NA 10.5 racer Rick Riccardi and Marc Poldino performed some suspension upgrades. They installed new AA Performance upper and lower control arms, AFCO shocks, Strange struts and other important parts. Johnson couldn’t be happier with the results, and plans to send his car back to Redeye Racecars over winter. He will keep us posted on what is being done to it, but meanwhile, check out a Spotlight interview with Johnson in an upcoming issue of Fastest Street Car.

Amy Faulk has a rich racing history, and her accomplishments over the years, including an NHRA Super Stock championship in 1979 and an NHRA Division 2 Hall of Fame entry, continue to be celebrated. She has been showcasing her skills in NMCA Micro Strategies Super Stock for the past few years, and she is currently leading points in a field of 43 racers despite dialing in some significant changes that she and her husband, Kenny, made to her LS-powered Firebird early this year. Keep an eye on this Tennessean. She has her sights set on another championship.

MagnaFuel Open Comp regular Mike Brice was busy reviewing data to adjust his 2015 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak’s tune up in the lanes this morning as racing got under way after a brief rain delay.

Back with the NMCA for the first time in a year, Richard Ingram Jr. is pulling double duty this weekend at the NMCA All-American Nationals as he’s racing both his collector’s item 50th Anniversary Hot Wheels limited edition 2018 COPO Camaro in the COPO Battle category and his supercharged 2017 model in the Holley EFI Factory Super Cars class. The Hot Wheels car features a 427 cubic inch powerplant and a turbo 400 transmission, and usually runs in the 9.20-second zone but has been as quick as 9.06-seconds in the quarter-mile previously. The other, meanwhile, runs on a blown, stock 350 ci setup and Ingram is hoping to walk away from the weekend with a few new winner’s circle photos to add to his collection.

Tom Bailey’s famous Sick Drag & Drive Invitational Quick 8 Shootout Presented by Gear Vendors is going down this weekend, and eight proven drag-and-drive competitors will run heads-up in the eighth mile to see who’s got the baddest ride of the bunch; rounds will be paired through a chip draw and the top two most successful entrants will compete for the overall title. Spectators can also get in on the action, as this race-ready 1957 Chevy Belair Gasser plus $5,000 in cash will be bestowed upon the lucky winner of Sick the Mag’s giveaway. Kyle Bemount arrived here at Summit Motorsports Park last night for the Sick Drag & Drive Quick 8 Shootout Presented by Gear Vendors, but was met with extreme weather and tornado warnings in the area. As a result, he had to wait until this morning to go over his Scram Speed-backed 2000 Pontiac Trans Am and get it set up to race. Powered by a 385 cubic inch LS engine and a massive 98mm single turbocharger, Bemount’s blue street car has gone as quick as 4.81 at 149 mph in the eighth mile. Despite the heavy, wet air, he’s planning to swing for the fences and hopes to improve upon the performance all while giving the audience a killer show.

Del Holbrook is ready to give it everything he has in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars competition this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park in his gorgeous green Mustang which gets from A to B with a 327 cubic-inch Coyote engine built by Holbrook Racing Engines and Whipple supercharger. This is his first race in the category this year, and he is focused on going rounds. Del, out of Michigan, is also competing in the NHRA Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown this year, and he is currently in the eighth spot in points in that category after a runner-up finish at the NHRA event at Bristol Dragway in Tennessee and a lead qualifier position with a 7.66 at the NHRA event here at Summit Motorsports Park. Meanwhile, Del’s father, Chris Holbrook, is making test passes in the wicked white Mustang he recently debuted for NHRA Factory X presented by Holley.

Respected content creator and Senior Editor at Power Automedia, Brian Wagner is on the property with the Dragzine “Project Number Cruncher” 1996 Pontiac Firebird to run in LME Street King Presented by Chevrolet Performance. Its all-motor 427 cubic inch LS engine features a Dart block with matching heads and Race Winning Brands internals, and was assembled by students at the School of Automotive Machinists & Technology. FTI supplied the Powerglide transmission and torque converter, and the Firebird has been fitted with a full Holley fuel system and FuelTech FT500 engine management system. Wagler has run the car only a handful of times since its completion, and although he’s had a personal best of 9.85 at 141 mph, he’s aiming for a 10.0 index this weekend.

As if drag racing wasn’t adrenaline inducing enough already, Mike Winters is staying hopped up on Diet Coke which he considers his lucky charm as he was drinking the beverage at Michigan when he won MagnaFuel Open Comp against his brother, Doug Winters. He’s hoping for a repeat performance this weekend and has decided not to mess with his Fox body Mustang GT’s setup as it worked so well last time out.

Currently sitting third in Dart NA 10.5 points, Rich Nye is ready to rip this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park but simply getting his Fox body Mustang to go A-to-B in the challenging weather is his primary focus. Nye’s EIC-built small block Ford engine and five-speed G-Force transmission have been serving him well with no need for updates or changes.
