Kevin Lumsden has accomplished a lot in his eleven years of racing in the NMCA.

He has won races and wheeled to records, but he had his heart set on a championship in NMCA Chevrolet Performance Stock presented by Scoggin Dickey Parts Center, and he was committed to reaching for the stars at each and every race in 2023 in his outstanding orange Camaro with an LS3 engine and RPM Transmission-built transmission.

Ready to get going, Lumsden made the trip from his home in Texas to the first race of the year, the Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem presented by Holbrook Racing Engines in March at Orlando Speed World Dragway in Florida. After leading qualifying, he had a solo pass and recorded a 9.76 in the first round. He then picked up to a 9.62 to power to the NMCA Winner’s Circle against Keith Vaughn.

Lumsden set the pace in qualifying again, with a 9.73, at the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport in April at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina. He had an off-pace pass in the first round of eliminations and lost with a 10.26.

Putting that behind him, he headed to the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Muscle Car Drag Racing in May at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, where he led qualifying with a 9.68. He slowed to a 9.80 on a solo pass in the first round of eliminations, and won the second round of eliminations with an .019 reaction time and a 9.86. With that, he faced former category champion Ronnie Hackelton in the final round of eliminations, and wrapped up another win, this time with a 9.83. It could be said that he had four victories that weekend, as in addition to the win in Chevrolet Performance Stock presented by Scoggin Dickey Parts Center,  he also won the Testo Super Bowl Shootout against Ronnie Hackelton, set the category’s elapsed time record with a 9.688 and the category’s speed record with a 135.39.

With confidence, Lumsden landed at the TorqStorm NMRA/NMCA Power Festival presented by Paul’s High Performance in July at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan, where he qualified in the first spot with a 9.81. He ran to a 9.85 on a solo pass in the first round, and won the second round with a 9.82 before going on to win the final round with a 9.81 against Charlie Booze Jr.

Getting closer to the end of the race season, Lumsden pulled into the 2nd Annual Mickey Thompson NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Sick the Mag in August at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio and qualified in the second spot with a 9.80. He kept his foot planted to a 9.84 after his opponent turned on the red light in the first round, and won the second round with a 9.82. Lumsden then finished as runner-up against Charlie Booze Jr. with a 9.87 to Booze Jr.’s 9.84 in the final round.

Ready to put a ribbon on the race season, Lumsden set out for the 22nd Annual NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance in September at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indiana. He led qualifying with a 9.76, won the first round with a 9.79 and put up a 9.82 on a solo pass in the second round. He then finished as the runner-up against Ronnie Hackelton with a 9.83 to Hackelton’s 9.79.

The season-long commitment and concentration helped Lumsden cement the 2023 NMCA Chevrolet Performance Stock presented by Scoggin Dickey Parts Center championship.

“To have finally made it to the top spot means the world to me as it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get there,” said Lumsden. “I want to thank my wife, Dionne, who has always been there through all of it, as well as my guys in the shop who help me, my son, Taylor Lumsden, Paul Chalupa, my buddies for helping me at the track, including Kurt Anderson, Bryan Williams and Shawn Calabrese, and my buddy Brian Jeffrey, also known as Madman, for all of the calls for suspension help. Kurt Anderson of AutoKraft Race Cars and Restorations built us such a great car.”
