Last May, NMCA VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod driver Jackie Slone surprised fans when he climbed out of his David Janes Race Cars-built 1969 Camaro and into his Jerry Bickel Race Cars-built 1969 Camaro.
He felt that the car was set up to go a little quicker and a little faster, and he was right.
Slone popped off a best of 3.73 and 202 mph on his way to a thirteenth-place finish in points, and then promptly turned his focus to picking up to 3.60s in the 2020 race season.
To help him achieve that, he freshened his Pat Musi Racing Engines-built 959 cubic-inch engine with new GRP rods, Bill Miller pistons and Total Seal rings, and Jesel is in the process of rebuilding his lifters. He also gave his Dart heads new PSI valve springs.
Pat Musi supplied the parts, and I did the work, said Slone, who lives just outside of Detroit in Michigan. He's a great guy, and I've had nothing but great experiences with him for my engine, which has run very well.
Slone also made the decision to go from his previous five-stage nitrous system to a six-stage nitrous system by SpeedTech.
I had been wanting an additional nitrous system, so instead of taking the solenoids apart, we decided to swap out the whole system, said Slone. SpeedTech has my Musi-built sheetmetal intake, and they're redoing it. They put a whole new set of solenoids, as well as new nozzles and lines, on it. They also did some intake repair and powder-coating.
Slone added that the new six-stage system will give him more controllability down track.
Having more systems will allow me to bring the nitrous in more softly, and the result should be more power and an even better-handling car, said Slone. Honestly, I hope to see a gain of three or four hundredths.
The rear of Slone's beautiful blue car will see shocks re-valved by TJT Motorsports, and a new ring and pinion by the Ring and Pinion Shop.
I think this is the best car I have ever owned, said a proud Slone, who relies on an M&M Transmission-built transmission and converter and Hoosier slicks to help plant power. It just drives very, very well.
Fans can see Slone's car under the lights in the LaFontaine Performance Parts display at the 68th Annual Detroit Autorama, Feb. 28-March 1 at TFC Center in Detroit, and he'll kick off his NMCA season with the 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals, April 2-5 at Atlanta Dragway.
