Thursday Coverage—2022 NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing presented by Fuelab

Posted By: Steve Baur
2022 marks the 17th year of the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing presented by Fuelab and the event's third year here at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in Madison, Illinois. The Super Bowl is also the second of three combined events, where both NMRA and NMCA series compete together.

Today's action kicks off with a test and tune session for racers with each class getting two runs. Here is today's run schedule and be sure to check back here throughout the day as we continue to update the daily coverage.

Jessie Coulter is back in NMCA action with his Third-Gen Camaro competing in Edelbrock Xtreme Street. The Jessie's Garage proprietor recently switched his 427ci engine over to CID cylinder heads and added a Smallwood Racing Development camshaft as well. Coulter feels the torque converter may be a little too tight still, but will be tuning on the Camaro to get the most out of it.

VP Racing Lubricant's Xtreme Pro Mod driver Craig Sullivan is having some updates done to his El Mero Mero Mercury, so he will be driving Mark Woodruff's Pro Mod/RVW Camaro in competition this weekend. Joe Oplawski will be handling the tuning on the FuelTech EFI that controls the ProCharger-blown, BAE Hemi built by Wild Irish Engines.

Many index racers compete in local bracket races and Nostalgia Muscle driver Chad Brewer is no exception. Unfortuantely he broke the flexplate in his Chevy Nova during one of those bracket races and couldn't get replacement parts in time for this weekend's event. Brewer purchased this 1968 Camaro SS from his friend's widow after his friend passed away last year. "He drove it at the first race at Commerce and i drove it at the last race at Commerce last year," Brewer said of his experience driving the Camaro. The F-body has been raced since 1977 and pack a Dart 400ci small-block that's good for high 10s, but Brewer will be dialed in for an 11.50 index this weekend.

Points leader in Edelbrock Xtreme Street Bill Trovato encountered some piston issues with his nitrous-assisted small-block at the previous race in Rockingham and with all companies backed up with orders, he turned to Swain Coatings to hopefully get him through until his new slugs show up. Some general maintenance on his Ford 9-inch rearend also revealed that the pinion support bearing had thrown in the towel and he and David Mitchell were taking care of that before making any runs with the Fifth-gen Camaro.

Don Baskin debuted his Chevy II Nova in Chevrolet Performance Stock in Bradenton, but a huge wheelie during testing took out the transmission pan when the car landed and put him out of competition. Baskin skipped the Rockingham race but is here at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway and his first hit resulted in a much more tame, 10-second run.
