Thursday Coverage Inaugural Comp Cams NMCA Homecoming Coverage presented by Edelbrock

It 's been an easy test and tune session for the opening day of the Inaugural Comp Cams NMCA Homecoming here at Memphis International Raceway, but the action ramps up tomorrow with qualifying. VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod driver Jim Widener was swapping on a different set of front tires this morning as he looks to change the rollout at the starting line of his nitrous-oxide-assisted, and BES Racing Engines-powered machine. Chuck Watson is back in action this weekend in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars as his Cobra Jet Mustang went back to the shop to be repaired after a top end incident during testing in Atlanta saw the car meet the wall. Watson set the mph record at last week's NHRA event in North Carolina with a speed of 180.72 mph, so it's still making the big horsepower that the Cobra Jets debuted with at the start of the 2019 season in Bradenton. While in the Watson Racing pits, we happened to catch a glimpse of Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo racer Kurt Neighbor installing a set of cams in Chuck Sr.'s Galaxie. Neighbor built the engine for the classic machine and was swapping in a pair of bumpsticks that are a little more streetable. After crashing his '53 Studebaker Pro Mod a short while ago, Morris, Alabama's Hank Stubbs and his team, including his father Ben and his uncle Tommy, picked up this Tommy Mauney Corvette chassis and stuffed their Brad Anderson blown Hemi between the rails. This is the first time out with the car since putting it together. Holley EFI Factory Super Cars racer Ted Hughes had to pull out of the last NMCA event in Atlanta early due to a family emergency, but he's here in Memphis ready to pick up where he left off with his COPO Camaros. Hughes told us they are making good headway with the Factory Super Car entry, and are looking to extract more potential out of his DR525-equipped Chevrolet Performance Stock machine. New to the NMCA's Can Engineering Stock/SuperStock Combo class is Llyod Wofford of Jonesboro, Arkansas. He's piloting his 2010 Super Stock Dodge Challenger Drag Pak this weekend, which packs a 360ci Drag Pak engine. The Volare behind him is also his, and will be driven by good friend James Caro in the class as well. Arizona's Ryan Bell left off 2018 with his Corvette running on 7 cylinders during the NMCA All-Star Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, but since then he's been making a number of changes to his engine program that have resulted in more horsepower for his Fuel Systems Technology NA 10.5 machine. Bell said he will contest the remainder of the 2019 NMCA season as well.   With the Saturday forecast, the NMCA staff has adjusted Friday's schedule for the Inaugural Comp Cams NMCA Homecoming event. The new schedule should provide all racers 1 time trial and 2 qualifying rounds of Friday.
