Championships are on the line this weekend as the NMCA and Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series Finals here at Lucas Oil Raceway bring the 2017 season to a close. A favorable weather forecast promises to deliver sunny skies all weekend long, and racers will be looking for the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle. This weekend will play host to a number of special features as the NMCA and Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series will also host the Victory Nostalgia Super Stock finals, an ATI NSS vs. Victory All-Star race, the Factory Appearing Stock Tire (FAST) racers, Discovery Channel's Street Outlaws celebrity appearances and more.
We were greeted this morning with a big yellow trailer waiting to get in, and inside was NHRA Pro Modified champion Troy Coughlin's Pro Line Racing-powered C7 Corvette. Also inside was the Third-Gen 1992 Camaro of Mike Rees. Rees debuted the Third-Gen F-body at the previous Norwalk stop, and his fianc Nicole Priola wheeled it in Radial Wars competition. Rees is also the car crew chief for Troy Coughlin's Pro Mod team and occasionally drives it in testing. All thing indicate we'll see it hit the track this weekend'stay tuned for more updates as they come in.
Often the first to run in the morning during qualifying and eliminations, it's no surprise that the first cars to burn some rubber today were Nostalgia Super Stockers. This weekend will decide the ATI Performance Nostalgia Super Stock championship, as well as the Victory NSS championship. Then both groups will square off once again in the NSS All-Star race.
After making the jump from Radial Wars to Xtreme Pro Mod and debuting a brand new and completely killer Pro Mod Mustang, Daniel Pharris brought home a win at the Bowling Green NMCA stop earlier this year. Despite its quick success, the Mustang needed more testing to extract the maximum out of it and Pharris' business hasn't alotted for that. To satisfy his need for speed, Pharris picked up this 1995 Mustang from KBX Racing's John Kolivas, and will compete in VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw competition this weekend and likely next year. The Precision turbocharged, 417ci engine requires less maintenance, and Kolivas who sold Pharris his Radial Wars Mustang has already sorted the car out. Tuning the Big Stuff 3 engine management system, Pharris and Kolivas are looking to click off some 4.40s with the car this weekend.
Debuting a brand new entry in Boninfante Racing NA 10.5 is joe Clemente of Burlington, NJ. The '93 notchback Mustang was yanked from the woods and sent to C&F Race Cars which installed the 25.1 chassis as well as the 4-link suspension. Martino Racing Engines assembled the 411 small-block Chevy powerplant that is topped with a Bob Book Racing Holley carburetor and backed by a Dave Smith transmission and Coan stall converter. Rich Concato is handling the crew chief duties and Mark Scordato, a former NMCA True Street competitor, is also serving as part of the crew this weekend. Clemente, a former Renegade competitor, has been 8.0s in testing and hopes to make a good showing this weekend.
As he has been chasing the J&A Service Pro Mod championship this year, we haven't seen too much of Michael Biehle II this year in VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod. His Pro line Racing-powered fastback Mustang, which he debuted last year, is still in NHRA trim for this race, so we'll see how different the quarter-mile setup is from the NMCA's eighth-mile version.
