There is no denying that Dodge and MOPAR are growing by leaps and bounds in the drag racing world, and the GEN III HEMI engine platform is the reason why. From the early SRT products to the supercharged Hellcats, Demons, and now Super Stocks, the late-model MOPAR market is hard charging and making waves in the drag racing community. It should come as no surprise, then that one of the biggest aftermarket performance parts companies, BBK Performance, offers numerous products for these cars, trucks, and SUVs, and it now offers an NHRA-legal throttle body for the engine platform as well.
One of the key features of the NHRA-approved BBK Performance throttle body is actually pertinent to late-model, GEN-III HEMI swaps and that is the cable actuation. As most late-model vehicles have now moved to electronic throttle control, that can be problematic when swapping engines into older cars. Some companies offer wiring harnesses and EFI systems that include an electronic throttle pedal, but the easiest and least expensive way to swap in one of these engines is to use a good ole cable-actuated throttle body.
BBK's cable-actuated HEMI throttle body is manufactured in the USA and is offered in an 80mm size (PN 1791), which is the NHRA-approved part, and 85mm (PN 1792). Part number 1791 is listed as approved for the 2019 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack 1320 392ci/6.4-liter engine combination, but it can also be used on any 5.7- and 6.1-liter engine if it's not used for NHRA competition. Those racers looking to use those particular engines could very well ask for approval for use with their combination. BBK's 1791 throttle body does require separate IAC and TPS sensors, MOPAR part number 5017479 AA is for the throttle position sensor and 5017479 AA is for the idle air control valve. Already putting the BBK Performance throttle body to use in NHRA competition is Division 5 racer Sam Reuland, who shares driving duties with his father, David, in their 2011 Dodge Challenger.
For their first race with the new throttle body, the father/son team entered a Stock Eliminator/Super Stock Combo, with father David driving it on Saturday and son Sam on Sunday.
We qualified number 6 both times, and on Sunday it was a hundreths off from qualifying a second under the index, Reuland said. We put the car in the Winner's Circle on Sunday, winning the NHRA Division 5 National Open in Kearney. The Challenger definitely drives smoother and it helps with the learning mode going down the track. We ended the season on a high note, and now year will be even better!
We'd be remiss if we didn't discuss BBK's other performance products for the Dodge crowd, as the market has exploded for the company. We contacted BBK's Tim Gilpin to get a better idea of what the company is seeing from market growth and product development standpoints.
