Alabama ambassador Bryant Goldstone first started running drag-and-drive events with his 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle back in 2010. This weekend, the gorgeous street car carried Goldstone to a new personal best of 7.70 in the quarter mile during pre-race testing. He clicked off a 7.86 pass before the Circle D Specialties True Street competition, then took the overall runner-up finish in the class on Saturday with an impressive three-run average of 8.920 seconds after having finished the requisite 30-mile cruise around the picturesque Ohio countryside. The Chevelle is powered by a 572 cubic inch engine with twin 85mm turbochargers and Goldstone bangs gears on a Rossler Turbo 400 transmission coupled with a ProTorque converter.
Finishing fourth overall in Saturday’s Dodge // Direct Connection Shootout with a three-run accumulated average of 9.369-seconds in his 2016 Dodge Charger, Michael England earned a spot in Sunday’s exclusive HHP Racing Quick 8 presented by Scoggin Dickey Parts Center. With his Mike’s Construction and Flooring facilitating his racing endeavors, England has run with the Modern Street Hemi Shootout series for half a decade but joined in on the Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals fun two years ago. During the off-season, Sipple’s Speed & Performance refreshed his 6.2L Hellcat Gen III Hemi engine on which he runs a ported IHC supercharger and a 75 shot of nitrous from Nitrous Outlet. Sipple’s also supplied the transmission, and ZH Tunes keeps the combination running smoothly.
Edelbrock Xtreme Street racer Paul Smith had a solid weekend wheeling his 1991 Chevrolet Camaro and held his own in the field of nearly two dozen entries. He qualified on a 4.635 at 154.51 mph hit, then picked up a round one win in eliminations on Friday night. With 585 cubic inches of BES-headed big block Chevy power built by him and his father, George Smith, along with a PKRE nitrous system, RPM Transmissions Turbo 400, and a combination of Santhuff/Menscer shocks, Smith hustled hard in round two but it wasn’t enough to get around Jessie Coulter in the opposing lane... Coulter flew by with Gen III Hemi power propelling his Mustang Cobra to put a 4.449 at 166 mph number on the scoreboards – the quickest and fastest of the weekend for the class.
Multi-time NMRA/NMCA champion Joel Greathouse (unofficially) wrapped up yet another title today, as his performance in eliminations has provisionally secured the 2024 Edelbrock Xtreme Street title. Greathouse qualified his KBX Performance-backed and turbocharged 1993 Ford Mustang in the number two spot with a 4.531 at 164.35 mph pass, then enjoyed a broke bye in round one of eliminations. When the other points contender Camren Massengale unexpectedly exited eliminations early in round two, it left the door open for Greathouse to get ahead. Greathouse himself took advantage of another bye in round two when he ran 4.578 at 158.22 mph with a respectable .005 reaction time.
It’s officially time for Bob Glenn to start writing his awards banquet speech! His daughter, Ashley Graziano, and the B&K Motorsports team celebrated on the starting line after Glenn picked up the second-round win in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod and simultaneously clinched the Red Line Synthetic Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals 2024 championship title for the category. Glenn’s absolutely gorgeous 1967 Shelby Mustang runs 521 cubic inches of roots-supercharged power, and now the group is hoping they can end an already wonderful weekend with a class win later this afternoon here at the Mickey Thompson NMCA All-America Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park.
Back in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod for the first time since the Rockingham race earlier this year, Mike DiDomenico’s weekend was off to a great start. He and the X1 Connecting Rods/CNC Performance Products team made some transmission and converter changes to their supercharged 2019 Corvette, and the adjustments worked in their favor. The Ohio-based doorslammer driver qualified second with a 3.637 at 209.65 mph, then picked up a win in the first round of eliminations on Saturday night when he ran 3.679 at 206.54 mph over Steve Easton. Regardless of what happens in the remaining rounds today, the fact that he’s racing a Pro Mod means he’s already won in the grand scheme of things.
Teddy, Robby and Troy picked a perfect spot in the grandstands to watch the racing at the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival at Summit Motorsports Park. Their family members are racing, but the trio rocking Sick the Mag caps, sipping water and munching on snacks, said they like watching all of the racers and action.
One of the great things about bracket racing, other than the fact that it lets practically anyone be competitive without having to be the quickest car, is the wide diversity of cars that can be found in it on any given day. This weekend, we’ve got everything from vintage Mustangs to modern Mustangs and many in between, such as the Fox towards the front, mixing it up in Bracket Open.
