As with many of the classes, NA 10.5 qualifying was set during the earliest rounds and Hudson, Florida’s Robbie Blankenship set that pace early with a 7.669 at 175.55 mph. His Mustang is powered by a small-block Ford engine and Blankenship rows the gears with his manual-transmission-equipped steed.
Running in both NMCA MagnaFuel Open Comp and NMCA LME Street King Presented by Chevrolet Performance, Steve DeMasellis is putting his “Patriot” 2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck to work this weekend. Powered by a 545 ci LSX engine with a 300-horsepower Nitrous Express upgrade, the 4L80E transmission puts its 963-rear wheel horsepower to the ground through a Ford 9-inch rear end. During Thursday’s testing, the truck had a little wheel hop and sheared off some of the wheel studs, but DeMasellis got it fixed up (and rewired his Holley system) in time to make the field in both classes. In Open Comp, an 0.084-second reaction time put him nineteenth in the order while in Street King, DeMasellis’s 11.085-second run on an 11.00 index ranked him seventh overall.
The Dez Racing-tuned machine of Justin Palmer has been on point all weekend, so it’s no surprise to see the Calypso Green coupe sitting in the top qualified spot. Palmer and tuner Mike Dezotel were able to navigate the tricky track conditions and put up a 4.305-second elapsed to set them up for eliminations on Sunday.
Also claiming the top spot early was Haley Burkhammer in her new, 6th-Gen Camaro CRC that she drives in Chevrolet Performance Stock presented by Scoggin Dickey Parts Center. Burkhammer clicked off a wheel-standing 9.81 on Friday, but her following two qualifying runs resulted in wheelspin. We’re sure her grandfather—and 2021 CPS champion—Ronnie Hackelton will be working on getting the Camaro to stick for eliminations. Burkhammer’s 9.81 could be good enough for the class record if she can back it up and the time stands once eliminations have concluded.
As he came off the track from his 4th qualifying run, Edelbrock Xtreme Street racer Bill Trovato was informed that his Camaro shot some flames out one side of his car towards the end of his run. "It was the same tuneup that we've had in it all weekend," Trovato told us. "It burned a strap and got the piston a bit, but we'll get it fixed. We're thinking there might be some debris in the jets, but we haven't checked them yet." Trovato, and crew members David Mitchell and John Costello were on the task to get the LS-based engine back up and running. Qualified third here in Rockingham, Trovato currently leads the class in points after setting the record and winning the season opener in Bradenton, Florida, in March.
The Rockingham Dragway track surface has proved to be tough to get a handle on this weekend. X275 veteran Ron Rhodes knocked the tires off on his first three qualifying runs, but managed to find the right recipe for traction for the fourth round. His nitrous-injected Camaro put the power down and posted a 4.349-second ET to shoot up to number two on the qualifying sheet.

After a 30-mile cruise, TorqStorm Superchargers True Street racers returned to the track to make three back-to-back passes as part of the compelling competition, and when it was all said and done, William Lujan was the overall winner with an 8.67 average in his Mustang, and Scott Oshinski of TorqStorm Superchargers was the runner-up with a 9.20 average in his Cutlass. Other racers in the spotlight were Gilbert Correa, the 10-second winner in his Mustang, Keith Lankheet, the 11-second winner in his Challenger, Dale Aldridge, the 12-second winner in his Mustang, Rodney Ward, the 13-second winner in his Mustang, Jonathon Baker, the 14-second winner in his Mustang and Timmy Thornburg, the 15-second winner in his Mustang.
A great assortment of Gen III HEMI-powered cars pulled in for the Dodge // Mopar HEMI Shootout at the Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport this weekend at Rockingham Dragway. Joshua Schwartz was the overall winner with a 9.04 average and Ed Springstead was the runner-up with a 9.47 average. Other standouts include Tony Demaio, 9-second winner, Bruce Phillips, 10-second winner, Bryce Rohrs, 11-second winner, Jerry Dixon, 12-second winner, Laura Willingham, 13-second winner, Nicole Ratliff, 14-second winner and Brett Foutz, 15-second winner.

There are many things to love about the NMCA, and the camaraderie among racers is one of them. Jim Widener suffered some severe tire shake during qualifying, and he and Tony Bischoff (Pictured) had to repair the X brace in their VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod Corvette last night. This morning, while we were talking, Bischoff found that two of the header primary tubes were also cracked, likely from the tire shake. The team’s hard work paid off, though, as they grabbed a first-round win over Craig Sullivan.
Chris Brooker of TorqStorm Superchargers has been enjoying some new found power in his 1969 Camaro after some discovery during a hub dyno session. Along with help from Mark Menscer on the suspension, Brooker’s Camaro has charged deep into the 8s during qualifying for LME Street King, and carrying the front wheels about 100 feet out has reportedly been a lot of fun as well.
Cody Herron runs MadFab, a fabrication shop in Floyd Knob, Indiana, which has done work for a number of name racing teams. He brought out this 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet to run in the Fastest Street Car Stock Eliminator category this weekend at the Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport. Having dabbled with NMCA racing in the past, he is excited about the standalone Stock class, and hopes to run more races next season when his schedule allows because he enjoys racing the series so much. Based on the body-in-white used to verify measurements on Cobra Jet builds, Herron’s CJ is powered by an 800-horsepower 429 big-block under the control of a BigStuff3 EFI system.
While Catherine Kosiba raced a Dodge Demon in NMCA competition a few years ago, she debuted her Drag Pak in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars at the Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport this weekend at Rockingham Dragway. The driver from Indiana qualified in the eleventh spot with an 8.12, had a solo pass in the first round of eliminations, and is back in her pit area preparing for the second round of eliminations. “We’re still shaking down the car and collecting data, but we’re happy with how it’s going,” said Kosiba, whose crew chief is her husband, Brad Kosiba. We look forward to seeing her in action again at upcoming races.
