Plenty of powerful passes were put down at yesterday's running of the 18th Annual NMCA All-American Nationals presented by Whipple Superchargers at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, and now, drivers are preparing for eliminations. Among those who cruised to the top of qualifying in their categories was Don Walsh Jr., who was 3.66 in his Corvette in VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod, and who is fresh off a win at the 14th Annual Nitto NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by FST Carburetors last month at Route 66 Raceway in Illinois. Dennis Breeden has been competing in Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo for three years, and has only missed one event. He does well, as he finished third in points in 2017, second in points in 2018, and is currently third in points. After driving to a 9.43 in his 2010 Drag Pak Challenger to qualify in the eleventh spot in the category, he's preparing for the first round of eliminations today. "With a third place finish and a second place finish the past two years, it would be really nice to be able to earn a first place finish this year," said Breeden.
Ron Belcher is back in NMCA action as the Kentuckian is competing in Edelbrock Xtreme Street this weekend. His Corvette is powered by an alcohol-sipping 400 cubic-inch engine which was built on an LSX block, topped with All Pro heads and fronted by a Vortech supercharger. After knocking the tires, Belcher put a 4.94 on the board to qualify in the thirteenth spot going into today's eliminations, and his crew chief, Kenny Johnson, who uses Holley EFI to handle the tune-up, said that while the weather conditions are far different from what they've raced in so far this season, they're close to figuring out exactly what the car, which is equipped with an RPM Transmissions-built Powerglide, wants to fly to the finish line.
Jason Fetter of Carlyle Racing set the Dodge Challenger Hellcat record today with a 9.312 at 148 mph. The car still retains its full interior, factory supercharger, and it's the first Dodge that he and fellow cohort in Carlyle Racing, Mark Carlyle, purchased to begin their Dodge performance upgrade program with. Carlyle himself was running right behind Fetter with a Hellcat Redeye that wasn't far off that time, and the two plan to put both cars in the 8s with the factory parts currently in use.
There are some racers in the NMCA who choose to compete in two different categories with two different cars, and among them is Jeff Frees. Fans flock to his very fine 1968 Barracuda in Quick Fuel Technology Nostalgia Super Stock, and to his very clean 2010 Challenger Drag Pak in Coan Stock/Super Stock. Both are 9-second machines capable of cruising to the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle, and the Challenger Drag Pak was most recently there with a happy, trophy-holding Frees at the 14th Annual Nitto NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by FST Carburetors in July at Route 66 Raceway in Illinois.
