When rain began to fall over the 16th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem at Bradenton Motorsports Park on Saturday afternoon and the final rounds of qualifying were cancelled, drivers turned their focus to diving into eliminations on Sunday morning, and as the reaction-times and elapsed-times throughout the weekend have proven, they're ready to rumble. Among them is Daniel Pharris, who drove to a 4.36 in his red Mustang (above) backed by KBX Performance, Bennett Racing Engines and Pressurized Solutions to set the pace in Vortech Superchargers Street Outlaw.
Track prep is currently underway, and as soon as it wraps up, ATI Performance Products Nostalgia Super Stock drivers will kick off this day of eliminations at the 16th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem.
As the 2017 Chevrolet Performance Stock presented by Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center champion, Jessie Wilson arrived at this first race of the season wanting to do well, and got off to a good start by running to a 10.02 a personal best to lead qualifying in the category in his father-in-law Kelly Pierce's 2015 Camaro. I'm just happy it's hitting on all 8 cylinders, said Wilson. We had an ignition coil fail and we were running on 7 (cylinders) during our runs on Friday. Kevin Lumsden was nice enough to let me borrow a coil so I can get through the weekend.
In his 2013 Mustang GT, longtime NMCA and NMRA driver Bobby Barrick is competing in MagnaFuel Open Comp this weekend, and with the .039 reaction time he recorded, he's qualified 29th going into today's first round of eliminations. Barrick, who had a stroke three years ago and really didn't think he would ever be able to race again, is doing just that with the support of family and friends, including fellow racers Donnie Bowles and Susan Roush McClenaghan, whom he pits with, as well as tuner Cal Hartline and crew chief Jake Hartline. "I'm very blessed with family and friends," said Barrick. "Donnie and Susan really took me under their wings."
While 2016 NMCA Fastest Street Car NA 10.5 champion Mike DeMayo Jr. ran a limited schedule in 2017, he has his sights set on attending all six of the events on this year's tour and chasing another championship. He got the ball rolling by blasting to a 7.79 to lead qualifying in his sinister black Mustang motivated by a 415ci small-block Ford built by Gaby Labiosa of EIC Motorsports, Ford D3 heads, an Edelbrock intake, Braswell carb and Ice Ignition. That elapsed-time replaces the category's previous elapsed-time record of 7.84, which he had set at this event last year. "We've continued to work on the heads and intake, and I'm glad to see it all working," said DeMayo Jr. "We're happy to be the first one in the class to get into the 7.70s and to have claimed the record, but you know me. I think we need to go ever quicker."
When Scotty Guiler's Cutlass was rolled out of the trailer, many fans assumed he would be behind the wheel this weekend at the NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem at Bradenton Motorsports Park, but as it turned out, Guiler had invited friend and fellow racer and multi-time winner Jamie Stanton to pilot the car for the year. While Guiler says watching Stanton stand on the pedal while he stands on the sidelines makes him feel 50 percent love and 50 percent hate, he's getting used to the idea, especially since Stanton ripped off a 4.73 to lead Edelbrock Xtreme Street qualifying.
Fastest Street Car NA 10.5 drivers and longtime friends Leonard Long and John Langer, who have raced each other 30 times through 15 years in various classes, are pitted next to each other this weekend, and have been talking about how Long is not running as quickly as he would like, and how Langer's engine is running out of fuel at 400 feet past the starting line. Later, they were paired for the first round of eliminations, and when Long was forced to lift in his Mustang, Langer got past him in his Trans Am and is readying for the second round of eliminations.
Andrew Handras hauled to a runner-up finish at this event last year, and is hoping to make another final round appearance this weekend. He's on the right road, as he ripped off a 3.80 to qualify in the fourth spot and to secure a personal best and he won first round of eliminations. He and his crew are currently preparing the 1969 Camaro he's piloting, which belongs to his dad, George, and scoots with a Fulton-built 903ci engine and nitrous, for the second round of eliminations.
Brian Keep of Ft. Myers, Florida, was one of many local Ultra Street racers that joined the Edelbrock Xtreme Street ranks here at the NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem. Keep's '98 Camaro packs a Hameetman Racing Engines-built small-block Chevy with All-Pro raised runner cylinder heads and an F1A-94 ProCharger. He qualified 4th with a 4.78, but the Camaro has run as quick as 4.69 previously, and he already earned a first-round victory in eliminations.
