Saturday Coverage | Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem

Posted By: Event Coverage Team
After a great day of testing and qualifying on Friday, the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales is slated for an action-packed day of heads-up, index, and specialty classes on the drag strip along with today’s Thrill Festival, which includes Larsen Motorsports Jet Cars, the Jurassic Attack Monster Truck Car Crushes, FMX Freestyle Motocross Stunt Shows, a Kid Zone, the Don Bowles Memorial Fireworks Show, and more.

Further ramping up the excitement this weekend are huge purse increases and top qualifier cash courtesy of Jack Roush as a tribute to his dear friend and former series racer, Don Bowles Sr. Race cars are adorned with Don Bowles Sr. tribute decals, and those heading to the Winner’s Circle this weekend will have even more reason to celebrate.

“The Bowles and Roush families have been big supporters and competitors with NMCA and NMRA racing for decades and we’re excited that Jack Roush has decided to give back to the racing community as a tribute to his dear friend Don Bowles Sr., who passed away the end of last year,” Steve Wolcott, president and CEO of ProMedia Events, said. “It will be exciting watching NMCA racers compete for the Don Bowles Sr. tribute cash up for grabs in Bowling Green. In addition to the increased purses and top qualifier money, each racer will receive an oversized check commemorating his or her win. Stay tuned as NMRA will also offer similar large payouts at the upcoming NMRA World Finals in Bowling Green as part of Jack’s tribute to Don Bowles Sr.”

With extra cash on the line, the competition on the track should be fierce on the track and high-flying on the Beech Bend Raceway oval, so stay tuned to this page and our social channels throughout the weekend for updates.

Here is the revised schedule for today (Saturday) which we will update with a start time once the radar shows more favorable conditions. We plan to run the True Street cruise today along with the Dodge Direct Connect Shootout and hope to move straight into E1 for all classes here at the Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales for stop #3 of the Red Line Synthetic Oil NMCA series.

Of course, there is plenty of other action in store for today — including Larsen Motorsports Jet Cars, the Jurassic Attack Monster Truck Car Crushes, FMX Freestyle Motocross Stunt Shows, a Kid Zone, the Don Bowles Memorial Fireworks Show, and more — as part of today’s Thrill Festival, and you can find that schedule HERE.

Jessie Coulter, of Jessie’s Garage right here in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is behind the wheel of Rick Ball’s Hemi-powered Mustang Cobra in Edelbrock Xtreme Street again. After the last Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals race, Jessie had the car’s front struts tightened up as the car wanted to wheelie even when they were adjusted to full tight before. Though it spun during Thursday’s testing at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales, Jessie said he knocked it on its head and it went down the track. He hopes to dial it in even more but says he just needs time with the combo.

You just never know what you might see at a Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals event. Rick Wahl brought out this fetching 1972 Dodge Colt to play in the Bracket class. He says this car, which runs straight down the track with ease is likely a former Pro Stock car, but these days it is the vessel for his God’s Speed Shop ministry. He says the best part of bringing the car out to the track is meeting people and having fun. He does field many offers from people wanting to buy the car, but it seems like he is pretty happy running this Mopar.

It could have been a lot worse for Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals racer Tim Frees, as the battery in his Plymouth wagon exploded en route to the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales. Fortunately, it didn’t cause any major damage or start a fire, but it did require some repairs and clean-up to get the car back into action in Fastest Street Car Nostalgia Super Stock.

With extra help from his crew chief/son Leroy, Khris Barr (left) is having fun in Erson Cams Nostalgia Muscle Presented by World Products this weekend at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales. During the week he builds torque converters at Ultimate Converter Concepts and he likes putting the converter he built to the test at the track in his .040-over 360-powered 1976 Plymouth Duster. The engine benefits from an Edelbrock carburetor, an Edelbrock intake, a COMP camshaft, and the Billet 8-inch torque converter that Khris built for himself and painted to look like a donut, which is the nickname they gave to converters at the UCC shop. His Bikini Metallic-painted Duster is running fifth in points in this Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals class, and he hopes to get back on track with Leroy’s help after a rough go at the previous race.

Rodney Ward never planned on running in Micro Strategies Stock Eliminator, but after being peer-pressured by Shane Williams and Danny Towe, he signed up at the Rockingham race, where he won all four classes he entered. Now he is running in first place in the points chase in that class, so he is committed to racing the full Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals season. He is only racing in three classes this weekend, but he could add another Bracket class to his list depending on how the weekend goes.
