It’s officially official and congratulations are in order, as VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod driver Steve Easton completed his NHRA Pro Mod quarter-mile licensing passes during Thursday’s test session. The Australian native already had his Fuel Car license but needed a few more hits to crossover to the doorslammer category. This weekend, he’s wheeling Cor Valentyn’s Tim McAmis-built and Americana-themed “Patriot” Pro Mod 1963 Chevrolet Corvette which is powered by a supercharged Steve Easton Motorsport-built Hemi.
There’s a Cobra Jet celebrity on the property! Bill Barr, 86-years-young, is attending this weekend’s Mickey Thompson NMCA All-American Nationals and Xtreme Sports Festival along with his daughter, Denise Barr-O'Connell, and they’ve brought some valuable pieces of CJ history with them to share with fellow Ford fanatics. Barr started working at Ford in the early 1960s and contributed to countless projects, including his many valuable contributions to the progression of the Mustang Cobra Jet platform, the Boss 302 engine, and multiple others. If you spot Barr on the property, he’s always happy to chat and reminisce about his days spent on FoMoCo’s engineering team, so be sure to say hello and express your thanks for his contributions to the Blue Oval community! Scoggin-Dickey Street Warrior 10.10 Presented by Chevrolet Performance racer Gary Parker had a flashback to his accident at Atlanta Dragway back in 2021 when he encountered top-end trouble during today’s third qualifying session. Parker felt a surprising jolt and thought his 2002 Mustang Ford Mustang had popped a tire and he was about to careen into a wall again, but fortunately, the latter didn’t happen and he was able to come to a safe, controlled stop. Turns out, the SN95’s bumper cover collapsed under the air pressure from the quick pass, and Parker drove straight over it. Thankful that the situation wasn’t worse, Parker will continue on to run in the first round of eliminations later today.
As an engine builder, owner of BTR Performance in New York and racer in Edelbrock Xtreme Street, Bill Trovato is always looking for ways to enhance the 465 cubic-inch LS engine under the hood of his Camaro. As a result, he continuously steps up, is successful and is holding down fourth-place in points out of 41 racers. He shared with us a little while back that he was having quite a time trying to find out what his combination wanted with the new rods and pistons he installed, and he was not picking up as much as he wanted to. Just before this race, he put his previous GRP rods and CP pistons back in his engine, along with new rings, and ripped off a personal best mph of 155.65 in qualifying here at Summit Motorsports Park. That was paired with a 4.55 and with those numbers, he is qualified in the seventh spot with a 4.55 out of 21 racers, and he is very hopeful heading into the first round of eliminations tonight.
BIGFOOT was crushing cars and making it look easy during the first of two car crushes scheduled for today at the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival. If you missed the first show, head to the car crush area behind the grandstands on the Summit side of the track at 3:30 p.m. today for the second show.
The man, the myth, the drag-and-drive legend Tom Bailey is on the property this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park for the 5th stop of the Red Line Synthetic Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals series to oversee the mind-blowing street car action in the Sick Drag & Drive Invitational. The six cars participating are some of the baddest street legal machines in the country, and Steve Morris led the way on Friday with his SMX-powered and turbocharged 1993 wagon topping the qualifying sheet with a sick 4.262 at 176.28 mph trip while Chuck Stefanski was hot on his heels in second with a 4.638 at 160.44 mph pass from his wicked 1981 Pontiac Grand LeMans Safari wagon.
Hosted by the North Coast Mustang & Ford Club of Ohio, the huge Hemmings.com Car Show today is chock full of all makes and all models, with tons of awards in dozens of categories as well as a special Best of Show custom award for the one ride deemed to be the top showpiece on the property. From pristine classics to rare models, heavily customized hot rods, modern muscle, and everything in between, there’s something for everyone to enjoy here at the Mickey Thompson NMCA All-American Nationals and Xtreme Sports Festival at Summit Motorsports Park.
The ring and pinion on Kyle Salminen’s double frame rail Jerry Bickel Race Cars-built 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier gave up the ghost during the second qualifying session of ARP Nitrous Pro Street on Friday evening, and the Florida-based racer hurriedly got to work installing a replacement so that he’d be ready when today’s racing resumed.
Kurt Anderson, left, and David Rickey were looking cool, calm and collected while chatting in the staging lanes before their first runs of the day at the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival. Both are accomplished competitors who have won races as well as the hearts of many race fans. Coming into this fifth of six events on the annual Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals tour, Anderson is in fifth-place in LME Street King and eleventh-place in MagnaFuel Open Comp points, while Rickey is leading LME Street King and in fourth-place in MagnaFuel Open Comp points. They are focused on going rounds to gather points here at Summit Motorsports Park and at the final race of the year, the 23rd Annual NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance, Sept. 19-22 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway.
There’s no quit in Bob Zelenak. Friday’s qualifying fun turned stressful when his nitrous-assisted 1993 Ford Mustang burned up a cylinder head. Fortunately, Zelenak’s father, Bud, and crewman, Troy, hopped in the truck and drove east while Zelenak’s mother grabbed a set of replacement heads from his garage at his home in Pennsylvania and drove west; the relay met in the middle, the heads changed hands, and Zelenak – who was busy helping other racers with repairs in the interim – quickly got to work repairing his injured engine as soon as the delivery chain was completed. Work wrapped up around 10:00 pm, and Zelenak will be ready to continue as today’s Edelbrock Xtreme Street competition gets going once again.
Jim Betz loaned his 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet (left) to a friend four years ago, and the car accidentally wound up wrecked when it hit the wall. Fortunately, Watson Racing rebuilt it to perfection, the 5.2-liter powerplant was filled with all sorts of goodies including titanium valves, and then the car was beautifully painted in its burgundy Merlot hue. This weekend marks the first time the car has been on track since its incident, and Betz is pleased with how consistently it’s performing in the Cobra Jet Showdown category, thanks to the hard work of the KSR team. And, even though the previous loan ended with destruction, Betz’s big heart remained intact; he's loaned two of his other Cobra Jets to friends this weekend – one Craig Sullivan to wheel in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars (right) and another to Jason Dietsch to flog in the Cobra Jet Showdown and MagnaFuel Open Comp (not pictured).
