Among those setting the pace in yesterday's first round of qualifying was Randy Adler with a 3.73 in VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod, Daryl Hameetman with a 4.42 in ARP Nitrous Pro Street, Ted Hughes with a 10.23 in Chevrolet Performance Stock presented by Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center, Richard Pingol with an 11.88 in Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock, Gene Chafens with an 11.00 in ATI Nostalgia Super Stock, Steve Wilson with a 10.26 in Detroit Truetrac Nostalgia Muscle Car, Kurt Anderson with a .001 in MagnaFuel Open Comp, Geoff Turk, whose 7.99 made him the first Holley EFI Factory Super Car driver to reach the seven second zone in competition, Mike DeMayo Jr. with a 7.79 in Fastest Street Car NA 10.5, Jamie Stanton with a 4.73 in Edelbrock Xtreme Street, Daniel Pharris with a 4.36 in Vortech Superchargers Street Outlaw and DeWayne Mills with a 3.90 in Mickey Thompson Radial Wars. David Barton, who finished in the top ten in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars after competing on a limited schedule in 2017, blasted to a personal best of 8.02 and the second spot in yesterday's first round of qualifying in the category, proving he will be a force in the Gary Wolkwitz-owned 2017 COPO Camaro he pilots. Helping him achieve that is the 350ci engine under the hood of the car, which was recently massaged by Ray Barton Racing before being mated with its 2.9 Whipple supercharger. New on the car this year are Lamb brakes, struts and shocks, as well as Weld wheels wrapped in 9-inch Mickey Thompson tires.
Part of this weekend's class lineup is the Mopar Hemi Shootout, which is a True Street-style of class featuring late-model Mopar muscle. Steve Best (at left) out of Ellenton, Florida, by way of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, brought his 2018 Dodge Demon and 2018 Jeep Track Hawk to the track to play in the shootout. Best hauled the new Demon down from Indiana using the Track Hawk, and he'll be driving that while Bill Lee Jr. (at right) is piloting the Demon, which so far has run a 10.0 in the quarter-mile. The Track Hawk is no slouch either, and has tripped the timers in 11.62 seconds.
Another racer in the Mopar Shootout is Dave Burnett of Land O Lakes, Florida. He's driving his 2016 Dodge Challenger R/T Plus and this weekend is the first time he's been down the track with the car, which is partially what the Mopar shootout is all about getting new enthusiasts to the track to enjoy their rapid Dodge and Chrysler products in a safe environment.
With his new Musi Racing Engines-built and nitrous-enhanced 959ci Chevrolet engine in his David Janes Race Cars-built 1969 Camaro, VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod driver Jackie Slone ripped off a personal best of 3.84 at 199 mph in yesterday's first round of qualifying and was sitting in the eighth qualified spot going into today's second round of qualifying. While he was hoping to go even quicker and faster, he ran into an issue in the waterbo`x and had to be backed off. The team is heading back to the pit area to go through their tune-up for the car backed by Mullins Auto Supply, LaFontaine Performance Center, Chevrolet Performance Parts, Hoosier Racing Tires and M&M Transmission, and will be ones to watch.
While some fans consider it blue and some fans consider it purple, all of them agree that Matt Salminen's 1969 Camaro is easy on the eyes, and with a 632ci Nelson engine amped up by a SpeedTech nitrous system under the hood, it runs as good as it looks. Salminen, who lives just a few miles from Bradenton Motorsports Park and frequents local Outlaw 632 races, is competing in ARP Nitrous Pro Street this weekend, and while he made it to the lanes too late to take part in yesterday's first round of qualifying, he posted a 4.60 in today's second round of qualifying. He's making a few adjustments to his tune-up and chassis before the next round of qualifying, and he hopes to achieve 4.30s sooner rather than later.
Puerto Rico's Waldemar Rodriguez, who regularly competes in NHRA FS/XX, has made his NMCA Holley EFI Factory Super Cars debut at this weekend's race at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Rodriguez, who's on the right in this picture of him and his crew, replaced the supercharged 350ci engine in his 2015 COPO Camaro with another Ray Barton Racing 350ci engine on Thursday, and clocked an 8.13 in the first round of qualifying yesterday and an 8.20 in the second round of qualifying today. In an effort to lay down the best numbers possible time and time again, he often'swaps information with fellow racer David Barton and other drivers in the class who have partnered for'research and development purposes, and will be one to watch in the next round of qualifying.
Craig Cerniglia, who competed in ARP Nitrous Pro Street at this event last year, went on to wreck in his 1969 Chevelle a few months later. He had the car rebuilt by Worthy Race Cars and is debuting the finished product which packs a nitrous-gulping 632ci Huntsville engine this weekend. As to be expected, he has had some issues crop up, but is confident he can coax some commendable numbers from his orange machine soon. Monday's shop built the car from the ground up, and the first runs on it were being made this weekend. A .941-second 60-ft time shows promise from the 598ci engine with billet Sonny's cylinder heads and an F-3R-136 ProCharger blower. Patrick Barnhill of PTP Racing is helping out with the tuning on the new Haltech EFI system, and the team plans to continue on with the NMCA series as it sorts out this new and super clean machine.
While he has been a fixture in the local Florida/Georgia Ultra Street Scene, Bill Gregan of Bradenton, Florida, joined the NMCA's Edelbrock Xtreme Street ranks this weekend and is currently qualified fifth with a 4.81 after two rounds. Gregan's '90 Mustang packs a Fast Forward Race Engines 430ci small-block with a Nitrous Outlet Stinger 3 plate system flowed by PKRE.
Marsha Broadley, who has never raced before, entered her 2010 Challenger #43 out of 500 made in the debut of the NMCA Dodge/Mopar HEMI Shootout category at this weekend's event. Proudly as she sat in the driver's seat waiting to pull into the lanes, she shared that her car has a 5.7L Hemi and that she collected timeslips that reflected passes in the 14s and 14s. I'm having a very good time, said Broadley, who lives in nearby Clearwater, Florida. I would definitely do this again.
