Some racers wilt under the pressure of a final round but Gabriel Ray clearly isn’t one of them. Racing in the final round of the special NMCA Nostalgia Super Stock vs. Victory Series Nostalgia Super Stock Shootout presented by Fuel Lab, Ray used a perfect .000 reaction time to seal the win against Shaun Johnston, who was a hair too quick with a -.004 red-light.

Ray, in his C/FX classed ’64 Chevy Chevelle, drove to a 9.73 on his 9.75 to finish the job, and claim the $1,000 top prize in the event, which was held during the NMCA World Street Finals presented by Chevrolet Performance at historic Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

The NMCA vs. Victory Series NSS All-Stars Shootout featured more than 30 vintage muscle cars racing in a handicap-style eliminator. Ray, of Atoka, Tenn., kicked off eliminations with a double-breakout win against Bobby Haberberger’s ’68 Dodge Dart. Ray was quick off the starting line in round two with a .012 light to help stop Pete Alles and his ’63 Fury while a perfect 9.75 on a 9.75 index was key to Ray’s quarterfinal win against the Hemi Belvedere of Jim Hafenhoff.

Ray punched his ticket to the final round after Bobby Lantero red-lighted in his ’67 Dodge Dart. In that round, Ray was also consistent with a .020 light and a 9.77 on his 9.75 index.

Johnston, of Millstadt, Ill., also delivered a solid performance on his way to the final round with wins against Bruce Lang, David Horton, Andrew Wheeler, and Doug Duell.

The Nostalgia Super Stock category is one of the most popular in the Red Line Oil NMCA Drag Racing Series with dozens of your favorite American Muscle Cars of all brands and models. Nostalgia Super Stock is an index-style footbrake-only class for the year models, body styles, and engine combinations, which accurately represent those cars, which raced in the A/FX and Super Stock classes of the ’60s.
