Race Wrap Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series, Round 2

Posted By: Event Coverage Team
Mother Nature was all talk and no action as rain threatened the second round of the Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series held during the 17th Annual NMCA Quick Fuel Technologies Bluegrass Nationals presented by Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center at Bowling Green, Kentucky's Beech Bend Raceway Park. Fortunately, the event went off with only minimal delays and there was some great heads-up LS-powered, drag-racing action. Jessie Coulter was the number-one qualifier in the special 275 radial-tire eliminator Brian Tooley Racing Real Street Shootout with his 4.791 at 148.94mph number. The 2017 Real Street champion and driver of the infamous turbocharged 91 Camaro then went on to win the class outright on Saturday when he took down Ernie Dampier and earned an additional $1,000 prize, along with a new LSX Bowtie block from Chevrolet Performance. Last year's Scoggin-Dickey Parts CenterChevrolet Performance Stock class winner, Jesse Wilson, maintained the momentum as he and his 14 Camaro lead the qualifying order on a 10.160 at 130.32mph trip. Wilson made it two in a row as he defeated Haley Rounsavall during the last eliminations pair of the weekend; Wilson went 10.205 at 130.23 mph to Rounsavall's 10.285 at 128.73 mph and late reaction. Running this weekend in the Chevrolet Performance Street Car Challenge, Jeff Brady had the quickest Chevy of all, as his 10 Camaro SS averaged 10.043-second through three passes to take the win outright. Hot on his heels with an 11.105-second average was Kevin Rowand and his 08 Corvette. Brandon Cardwell won the 11-second average, Dennis Pett won the 12-second title, and Jeremy Britt went home victorious in the 13-second group. The 10 Camaro belonging to Jeff Brady was king of the qualifying hill in LME Street King with a near-perfect 10.001-second elapsed time on a 10.00-second dial in. In the finals, though, it was the number-five qualifier, Taylor Lumsden of Caddo Mills, Texas, whose 01 Firehawk hooked the win even though he broke out of his 10.00 index with a 9.965 at 135.16 mph pass as Kurt Anderson in the opposing lane was -0.009-seconds red on the tree. Proform Rumble saw a solid group of racers all doing their best to run as close to their dial-ins as possible, but Tim Earle had the magic combination as his 11 Camaro was only 0.011-seconds over its intended elapsed time of 12.50. Running on a 13.00 index and breaking out by a tenth, it was number three qualifier, Keith Vaughn, whose 04 Pontiac GTO reigned supreme as opponent Bobbie Strong fouled the start and gifted the win to Vaughn. Lastly, in LSX Gear Vendors True Street, six drivers went home victorious in their respective categories, including overall winner Daniel Rensch who averaged 7.862-seconds, runner-up Terry Faust who averaged 9.167-seconds, Dietrich Ballinger who topped the 11-second group, Tom Calabrese who was the best of the best in the 12-second group, Michael Dabbs who won for the 13-second racers, and Nicholas Massengale who picked up the win for the 14-second pack.
