Not long after laying down 7.90s and earning the 2015 NMCA Quick Lane at Downs Ford NA 10.5 championship, Leonard Long decided to move from carburetion to a Holley HP EFI system. Dale Cubic of CFM Performance Carburetors has always done a great job with my carburetors, but I felt that it was time to try fuel injection, said Long, owner of G-Force Transmissions and Long Shifters in Cleona, Pennsylvania. To complement his new EFI system and his tried-and-true 419 cubic-inch small-block Ford, he turned to Dave Visner of Visner Engine Development - whose massaged Ford D3 heads he runs and whose sheetmetal manifold he had been running - to help him build a throttle body to go with a new Edelbrock cast manifold and RC Fuel Injection injectors. Dave Barton of Ray Barton Racing Engines helped design a tune and dyno his engine, which now features a Weldon high-pressure fuel pump and regulator. Long will continue to row gears via his G-Force Transmissions GF2000 five-speed. We did back-to-back pulls and made back-to-back passes at Cecil County Dragway in Maryland with the carb and electronic fuel injection, and while I don't want to give numbers, I will say that we really didn't see any horsepower gain with the electronic fuel injection over the carb, said Long, who declines to share what size injectors he's using or a picture of his engine with the new set-up. We have, however, recently done a lot more dyno work, so maybe we'll pick up once we're on the track. We feel that we may have an easier time tuning the combination with electronic fuel injection. Long, who admits to feeling as though he has a target on his back as the reigning class champion, is looking for 7.80s in 2016, and will fire up his season beginning with the 14th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem, March 10-13, at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida.
