Memorial Day Drag Racing at Maple Grove Raceway
By Dan Grippo
Americans truly enjoy their Memorial Day traditions. In addition to honoring fallen service members, Memorial Day marks the start of the summer season. Some hit the beach, some open their pools, and some hit the yard work hard. But for northeast drag racers, especially NHRA Class racers, the holiday means one thing—heading to Pennsylvania for the second stop on the Division 1 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule.
The D1 points meet at scenic Maple Grove Raceway, is always one of best attended LODRS events in the country. Hosted by the Koretsky family’s Maple Grove Raceway, the classic drag race attracted 118 Stock Eliminator entries, 85 Super Stockers and a 540-plus total car count.
A long with stout fields, tight competition, and wheels up launches, folks were treated to Saturday night’s fan-friendly show. The Koretsky’s “Night of Chaos” featured night-time Alcohol Dragster/Funny Car eliminations, Hemi SS/AH challenge, Jet Dragsters and fireworks!
The true reason for the holiday was not lost in all the fan fair, as a pre-show salute to all service men and woman took place on the starting line before the national anthem.
The following gallery showcases some of the cars participating in Stock and Super Stock eliminators. If you like what you see, these classes can be found at all NMCA events throughout the year, presented by Micro Strategies. In fact, Micro Strategies CEO Anthony Bongiovanni competes in both NHRA and NMCA competition. And in addition to sponsoring NMCA Stock and Super Stock, Micro Strategies is also the NHRA North East Division Open series sponsor.
