When her husband, Dustin, convinced her to make her first pass down the dragstrip in 2019 at the NMCA World Street Finals in Indianapolis, Indiana, Lindsay Wheelock was a little intimidated. She quickly realized, though, that she loved the sport and has been full speed ahead ever since. That first outing had Wheelock behind the wheel of her father, Mike Alsop's Dodge Demon, which she ran in the Dodge//Mopar HEMI Shootout category.
I did an interview for Dodge Garage that weekend, too, and when we went to SEMA that year, we knew we needed one of the new 2020 Dodge Drag Paks, said the 34-year-old Indiana-based mother of three of her new trajectory in life. As fate would have it, the Wheelocks got a spot on the exclusive list to purchase a limited-run Demon, but life went a little sideways with the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and unexpected trouble with her father's business. We thought we were done drag racing and we would have to quit, but, as quickly as everything fell apart, it all came back together, Lindsay noted how her family wound up taking delivery of their new Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak in October of 2021 instead. Finished to Lindsay's specs with its red, white, and blue graphics package, the Watson Racing-built muscle machine features a 354 ci HEMI V-8 engine built around a Mopar cast aluminum block with billet crankshaft and forged rods and pistons and matching aluminum cylinder heads. The three-speed Turbo 400 automatic transmission is race-ready from the factory with a 10-inch, high-performance torque converter and lightweight aluminum driveshaft effortlessly transferring the power from the Whipple 3.0-liter, twin-screw supercharger to the ground via a set of Hoosier tires. Complete with a 7.50 ET-certified Chromoly cage to improve chassis rigidity and a four-link rear suspension, the Mopar also features custom Bilstein Drag Pak double-adjustable coil-overs and a Mopar K-member to help it hook on the racing surface. Lindsay was thrilled the day she picked up her new ride, and is ready to get going in 2022, with a stint spent learning at Frank Hawley's Drag Racing School as well as some seat time in the family's COPO Camaro at various NMCA races in 2020.
Looking ahead, Lindsay expects to run the Mike Alsop Chevrolet-Buick-backed Drag Pak in the NMCA Holley EFI Factory Super Cars category as well as in NHRA Factory Stock Showdown with support also from E3 Spark Plugs and VP Racing Fuel, while Dustin will run the COPO in the NMCA, too. There's still a lot of work to do to get everything where it needs to be and time is running out with the first race coming up, but we'll get there," affirmed Lindsay, who is on the hunt for her first elimination round win. "This will be the first year where I feel like I have some experience and can give it my all. I'd like to show people that you can jump into something with zero experience, enjoy it, and make it happen."
