Kevin Gass Ready to Chase Third NMCA Nostalgia Super Stock Championship

Posted By: Mike Galimi
By Mary Lendzion There are a number of things that Kevin Gass has noticed while racing in the NMCA Quick Fuel Technology Nostalgia Super Stock category for the past seventeen years. For starters, he swears that with each event, drivers hit the tree harder and run closer to their chosen index during qualifying and eliminations. But he's right there with them, and he proved that when he earned his first championship in the category in 2018, and his second championship in the category in 2019 in his super-clean and classic Chevelle. The latter was decidedly more difficult to achieve, the Kentuckian said, and it came down to the final event of the year, the 18th Annual NMCA World Street Finals last September at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana. But after taking his place in the spotlight alongside his fellow champions at the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals presented by E3 Spark Plugs Awards Ceremony presented by Aerospace Components last December at the Indiana Convention Center, Gass set his sights on the 2020 race season, and more specifically, how he was going to go after a third championship. He has freshened his engine, which is a 565 cubic-inch big-block Chevy built on a Dart block and topped with Canfield heads ported by Jimmy Bridges and a Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake manifold also ported by Bridges. He refers to the heads and intake as antiques, but they do their part to help the engine handle going through the traps at 7,500 rpm pass after pass. I replaced the timing belt, checked the valve springs, which were perfect, checked the lifters, which looked great, got new spark plugs and changed the oil, said Gass, who also made a band adjustment and changed the fluid in his ATI-built Powerglide while he was at it. Now, he's ready to roll out for the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem presented by Holbrook Racing Engines, March 5-8, at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida. The car is ready, the truck is ready and my wife, Kim, and I are ready, said Gass. I would like to defend my championship and have fun with our NMCA family and friends. Those are my goals for this year.
