Posted By: Steve Turner & Ainsley Jacobs
The Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals series returns to historic Beech Bend Raceway this weekend for the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales. The action began yesterday as racers rolled down the winding entry road into the track to get set up and ready. Those on hand ran test ’n tune hits as part of the buildup to today’s qualifying runs.

If you aren’t already out at the track, you will definitely want to get here tomorrow, as the action shifts into high gear with the addition of Saturday’s Thrill Festival. It adds another level of nonstop high-performance fun that includes Larsen Motorsports Jet Cars, the Jurassic Attack Monster Truck Car Crushes, FMX Freestyle Motocross Stunt Shows, a Kid Zone, the Don Bowles Memorial Fireworks Show, and more.

Here is a look at today's drag racing schedule. Of course, there is plenty of other action in store on Saturday —including Larsen Motorsports Jet Cars, the Jurassic Attack Monster Truck Car Crushes, FMX Freestyle Motocross Stunt Shows, a Kid Zone, the Don Bowles Memorial Fireworks Show, and more —  as part of the Thrill Festival, and you can find that schedule HERE.

This weekend at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales there is extra excitement as Jack Roush pumps up the purses for racers as a tribute to the late Don Bowles Sr., who was a dedicated Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals competitor. Race cars will wear Don Bowles Sr. Tribute stickers this weekend, and those taking trips to the Winner’s Circle to collect their Victor awards will take home extra cash in his honor. For the full details on the purse increases, click HERE. There is even a Don Bowles Memorial Fireworks Show scheduled for tomorrow night.

This Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals weekend is a family affair, as Karl Blincoe brought his two sons Oliver and Knox to race the family’s Camaro in two classes. Oliver is running in Bracket competition, while Knox is competing in Micro Strategies Super Stock. However, once at the track, they discovered the car needed fresh ball joints and tie rod ends, so some maintenance was required before their fun could get going at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales.

Speaking of maintenance, Edelbrock Xtreme Street racer Stephen Barnett’s Fox Mustang experienced uncharacteristic traction issues in testing, so he borrowed some rear shocks from fellow racer Joel Greathouse, who Barnett said “really saved the day” at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales. He hopes to get the car dialed in and ready to fly in Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals competition this weekend at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Fresh off of a victory in the Race For The Rings in St. Louis, Holley EFI Factory Super Cars racer Marc Heidings of Marco Island, Florida, who competes under the Low-Budget Racing banner was back in action at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales with a fresh engine. After experiencing some on-track issues, he also swapped in a looser converter to get ready for the kickoff of Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals qualifying today.

After running in several Jr. Street races in Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals competition, Jaden Dietsch made a natural transition into Scoggin-Dickey Street Warrior 10.10 Presented by Chevrolet Performance where it only took one pass to get used to the transbrake. Running a converted Mustang street car that her dad Jason picked up for a song, Jaden wasn’t happy running 10.30s so they concentrated on removing weight with a carbon fiber seat and RC Components front wheels, the latter of which trimmed 40 pounds of the front of the car. She ran a 10.11 in testing, so she should be in the mix this weekend.

You see a little bit of every kind of American muscle machines competing in the Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals, but it’s not often that you see two Oldsmobiles side by side. Dale Wolford has long raced his 1970 Oldsmobile Rallye 350, which is powered by a 477-cube engine backed by a Yellow 477 TH400  trans and a Moser 12-bolt ran with a 4.30 gear. However, this weekend he brought the white Oldsmobile out of hibernation with a fresh powertrain and put his brother Jason, who painted both cars, behind the wheel after an 11-year absence from track action. Both cars are competing in Fastest Street Car Nostalgia Super Stock this weekend in Bowling Green.

Jason Dietsch, of Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales fame, is on the property with two Mustangs competing in both ARP Open Comp and Holley EFI Factory Super Cars at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales. He says the two Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals classes are spread out enough that it is easy to make both sessions. In a move designed to improve his reaction times in Factory Super Cars, he recently switched his Open Comp machine to a foot-brake launch, and it seems to be paying off.

It’s a special weekend for Cameron Bowles who is running the family’s Maverick at a Red Line Oil Muscle Car Nationals event celebrating his late grandfather, Don Bowles Sr. by bestowing winners with enhanced purses. He said the car was running inconsistently, but he tweaked the carburetor enough to get the car back to repeatable performance. It isn’t fully optimized, but he is leaving it alone until after the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales. “Grandad was the carb guru,” he said. “I soaked up as much as I could but couldn’t get everything.”

Enticed by the increased purses boosted by Jack Roush to honor the late Don Bowles Sr. this weekend at the Scoggin Dickey NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Scott’s Trailer Sales, Holley NMRA Ford Nationals regular Mike Roup is competing in ARP Open Comp. He is dialing in his reaction time by adjusting the shims on his transbrake release and putting on some shades. He also took some weight out of the car so he can lift to make it run what he needs it to. Next weekend, Roup will head to Summit Motorsports Park for the Mickey Thompson NMRA Ford Homecoming Presented by Anderson Composites & TransTec Thrill Festival.

Chad Neuenschwander hasn’t had his 1988 Ford Mustang out since the Indy race last season (where he went to the finals for the first time) but is back and ready for battle in Dart NA 10.5. A new K-member and new headers necessitated Chad rebuild the Fox body’s front end while his son, Dylan, built the car’s new Edelbrock SC1-headed 450 cubic inch small block Ford powerplant at Stanfield Racing Engines. This weekend, the Indiana-based men are lining out the new combination and are excited to be on track together as a father-and-son team. After the first round of qualifying, a 7.935 at 174.23 mph has put Chad in sixth and shows he's definitely heading in the right direction.

ARP Nitrous Pro Street contender Tim Barton of Bohemia, New York, is taking his ET Duct-backed 1973 Chevy Nova back to builder Henry Fryfogle at HFR Fabrication for some updates but stopped in at Beech Bend Raceway Park today to make a few test passes before the car goes under the knife. The Shafiroff-built and Fast Lane Nitrous-infused 638 cubic inch powerplant is backed by a Liberty transmission with a Ty-Drive converter drive and Neal Chance torque converter, all controlled by a Holley EFI system that’s tuned by TNT Performance Auto.

If you spot Kim Mapes on the property at Beech Bend Raceway Park today, wish him a happy birthday as the talented tuner behind the keyboard of Hard Drive Racing/Jim Betz’s Edelbrock Xtreme Street “Madame X” 2015 Cadillac ATS entry is spending his weekend in the best place possible – at the track surrounded by seriously badass cars.
