The stage has been set and now it's time to open the curtain on the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
We'll see exceptionally exciting qualifying across all categories on Friday, August 23, as racers capture points and get closer and closer to clenching season championships at this fifth of six events on the annual Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals tour.
Also featured at this weekend's event will be the Cobra Jet Showdown, COPO Camaro Shootout presented by COPO Parts Direct, Dodge DIrect Connection Shootout, and the NMCA vs Buckeye Stock/Super Stock All-Stars, which is a 32-car class made up of the top points leaders in NMCA Micro Strategies Stock and Super Stock and Buckeye Stock/Super Stock Drag Racing Series.
In addition to all the drag racing, the Xtreme Sports Festival on Saturday, August 24 will feature BIGFOOT Car Crushes, Pro FMX Motocross and BMX Stunt Shows, and Pro Skateboard Exhibitions. Also, be sure to check out the Win Free Stuff Fan Experience, car show, manufacturers midway and more!

We will feature coverage, including news, qualifying results, eliminations results and photos all weekend, followed by a race wrap, so stay with us!
The BIGFOOT Monster Truck is very popular at Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals events and Summit Motorsports Park events, and the behemoth always holds its own in the spotlight. While BIGFOOT is behaving right now, it will go into beast mode for car crushes at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival at Summit Motorsports Park. Make plans to behold the sight on the Summit side of the track.
Jeff Ikard won’t toot his own horn, so please allow us to toot it for him. Ikard, from Toney, Alabama, is holding down seventh-place in Dart NA 10.5 points in his Mustang with a 415 small-block Ford by Huntsville Engine, two carburetors by Gary Williams and a five-speed by G-Force Transmissions, and considering the competition, that is no easy feat. He is currently qualified in the sixth spot out of 11 cars with an 8.09 at the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival at Summit Motorsports Park, and he and his crew chief, Todd Blicharz, are on top of what they need to do to his car and combination to creep up even further in the next qualifying session. “We are currently setting up our Boninfante clutch, which we have to do after every round,” said Ikard. “We are not in the top in the class, but we are learning a lot, and we will get there soon.”
Yes, that’s Craig Sullivan but no, that’s not El Mero Mero… Sullivan’s pride and joy Pro Mod '49 Mercury went up in flames earlier this year, and he’s been hankering to get back in the driver’s seat. Fortunately, his friend and fellow racer, Jim Betz, generously and graciously loaned Sullivan one of his cool, clean Cobra Jets to run in the Holley EFI Factory Super Car class in the interim.
Not new to racing but “new-ish” to the Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals series, John Vergotz is back with the VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod field after a few years away. The Pennsylvania-based racer’s ride, a beautiful 1969 Chevrolet Camaro backed by his A-1 Automotive business, was originally built by Jerry Bickel Race Cars and is motivated by a 974 cubic inch Pat Musi engine with a hefty supply of Switzer Dynamics nitrous oxide. Yesterday’s test sessions went well as the family-run team made some changes and tried a few things, then Vergotz clicked off a cool 3.747 at 199.37 mph hit during the first qualifier on Friday.
While Craig Maddox usually campaigns his 2015 Challenger in NHRA Stock Eliminator, he decided to try Micro Strategies Stock Eliminator for the first time at the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park. His car captured our attention in the pit area, or maybe it was his legs sticking out from under it, but he was in the middle of replacing his TorqueFlite transmission with a backup TorqueFlite transmission as it was slipping during testing yesterday. Maddox seems to be good to go now, as he ripped off a 9.49 with a 426 Hemi under his hood in the first round of qualifying today and is currently qualified in the sixteenth spot out of 28 racers at this fifth of six events on the annual Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals tour.
California-based racer and part of the Calvert Racing Suspensions family, Brent Calvert made a quick adjustment in the staging lanes before he cut a quick 0.003-second light during Friday morning’s first qualifying session of the Cobra Jet Showdown class. He settled provisionally into the number two spot with his 2014 Mustang Cobra Jet, and mid-field in the massive MagnaFuel Open Comp group with two sessions of each still to go before eliminations begin later this weekend at the Mickey Thompson NMCA All-American Nationals and Xtreme Sports Festival for stop #5 of the Red Line Oil NMCA Muscle Car Nationals series.
It’s musical chairs, er, cars over in the Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales pit with nine individual Mustangs corralled in style. Fully recovered from his recent kerfuffle with the wall, Jason Dietsch was able to repair his Whipple-supercharged Mustang Cobra Jet (and ran it last weekend at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Minnesota) but with six races coming up over the next seven weeks, he decided to play it smart and swap back and forth between his CJ and the 2004 model he borrowed from KSR teammate Jim Betz (center, left). This weekend, Dietsch is piloting Betz’s machine, but with his own drivetrain under the hood, in both the Cobra Jet Showdown as well as MagnaFuel Open Comp. Similarly, his son, Taylor Dietsch, is also double-entered into both categories with his own 2014 Cobra Jet (center) and took the top spot in the Cobra Jet showdown class after the first qualifying session with a perfect 0.000-second reaction time.
Just like its driver, this 1968 Mustang is much more than meets the eye. An original Cobra Jet 135 Series, Vinny Lyons is its original owner. Lyons worked at Rye Ford in New York starting in 1962, then obtained his Cobra Jet straight from the Ford factory. He held on to it over the years, only temporarily putting it into storage while his kids were growing up. Now, he's making up for lost time by racing the Cobra Jet as much as possible – this weekend in the NMCA Cobra Jet Showdown category, although he usually runs with the Holley NMRA Ford Nationals. Despite some naysayers, Lyons likes the fact that he’s respecting the 427 cubic inch FE-powered car’s original history by letting it fly on the track and honoring the purpose for which it was built.
After catching his arm on the door latch in his motorhome at the Holley NMRA/Red Line Oil NMCA Race for the Rings & Saturday Thrill Festival in May at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, Andrew Wheeler had to go to the hospital for stitches. The doctor advised him to park his 1967 Coronet until he healed, so he missed a few races, but he is back in action in Nostalgia Super Stock at the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels NMCA All-American Nationals & Xtreme Sports Festival this weekend at Summit Motorsports Park. Andrew, whose son, Brent, also competes in the category, achieved an eighth-place finish in points last year, and prior to his injury, he was hoping for another top-ten this year, and while that is not likely since he was sidelined, he is as dialed in as ever and ready to pick up where he left off as he recorded 10.47 on each of three passes he has made so far this weekend with help from his 440 cubic-inch Chrysler engine, and will run the 10.00 index.. “I am glad to be back to racing, with help from my son, Brent,” said Andrew. “He works so hard on our Mopars. Mopars are the only things we have raced.”
Rick Mettie of Luna Pier, Michigan loves Circle D Specialties True Street and feels that it is the best fit for his street-driven Mustang powered by a 363 cubic-inch small-block Ford. While Shafiroff Race Engines built the shortblock, Mettie finished the engine and paired it with a Nitrous Express kit and backed it with a Tremec TKX five-speed transmission, and he smiles when he shares that rowing the gears is a really rewarding experience for him. We couldn’t help but notice that Mettie was sporting taillights from two different Mustang model years on the back of his car, and as it turns out, someone accidentally hit the back of his car in their vehicle, but Mettie found a replacement taillight for the right side and is good to go with his GLORYDZ license plate on display.
