Qualifying begins today here at the 10th Annual NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport. The NMRA/NMCA tech staff checks the roll out prior to qualifying at every venue it visits to make sure that the playing field is even and that the timing equipment is accurate. If you weren't at the track yesterday, you missed the Race Parts Solutions racer appreciation party where free pizza, wings and beverages were offered, and the bench racing was fierce. New to the NMCA family is longtime Pro Mod racer and outlaw star, Jeff Byrd, thanks to a recommendation from Rick Hickman (who also taught him all he knows about running a racing program.) Running in VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod, Byrd brought his self-built car to Atlanta Dragway to play. A billet Brad Anderson Enterprises 521ci Hemi engine with Noonan heads sites between the front Hoosier tires, and a PSI C-rotor blower brings a whopping amount of fun to the party. Other goodies include a Lenco gearbox, Racepak electronics, and Strange suspension components. The Tennessee-based racer ran a 3.87-second pass during yesterday's test session when he let off early and is expecting to be down in the .60s today as he gets into a rhythm and turns up the wick. Why is 9-time world champion John Urist smiling Because after lots of hard work and late nights, he and his Hellion Turbo team are finally progressing in the right direction with his Turn 14-backed S550 forward. The guys have been busy focusing on the drivetrain of the MMR-powered car and have found a few small things that added up to a big boost in performance and a new personal best for it of 4.37 at 167 mph during yesterday's NMCA Vortech Street Outlaw test session. Mark Wells son, Cash Wells, is on site with the team's mascot. A 5-year-old white-headed Capuchin monkey named Buddy Love even has his own Simpson racing suit and has been having fun sneaking dollar bills in the pits. There's a new Twizzler-guzzler in NMCA Vortech Street Outlaw racer Manny Buginga's trailer, and he's sporting one hell of a glorious beard. World-renowned tuner, Josh Ledford of Pro Line Racing, is working with Buginga to handle the ins and outs of Buginga's turbocharged 03 Mustang Cobra's FuelTech EFI system. Kelli Ulrey was shining up Jeff Rudolf's all-new Pro Mod 69 Camaro, which she lovingly named Janet in honor of the fact that the car is a nasty b*tch! Rudolf made the jump to the VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod category from his previous home in ARP Nitrous Pro Street and had his new carbon Camaro built by the team at Larry Jeffers Race Cars with wiring done by 2017 NMCA VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod champion Steve Summers. Powering the beautiful black ride is a Haltech-controlled engine also from Summers, with a set of twin Garrett turbochargers and a Liberty's three-speed transmission. Rudolf's 4.01-second elapsed time during yesterday's test session certainly isn't anything to disregard, as it was his first time running a turbo car and he lifted early in the pass. Jason Hamstra's beautiful Xtreme Pro Mod Camaro, which can be seen on the NMRA/NMCA series poster available in the June issue of Fastest Street Car magazine, suffered some major engine damage during testing yesterday when an errant rubber O ring clogged one of the engine's mechanical fuel injectors, leaning out the cylinder, which torched its way to the atmosphere. Hamstra and team were busy swapping out the power plant last night, and during the first hit today made during the first round of eliminations , Hamstra's machine clocked a record elapsed time for the class at 3.67 seconds. There was a meeting of the minds between NMCA Vortech Street Outlaw driver Andrew DeMarco and PTP Racing's Patrick Barnhill as the two discussed what changes to make to DeMarco's recently-refreshed and Vortech-supercharged White Girl Wasted 86 Mustang or perhaps they were just arguing over what to order for lunch. New York native Bill Trovato took a quick minute to tweak a few things in his nitrous-infused 13 Chevy Camaro as he blew the tires off during the first NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street qualifying session. Kentucky-based racer Billy Harper's 00 Dodge Viper shook the tires in round one of NMCA VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod qualifying today, so the guys are throwing whatever they can at it to get the Sonny's Racing Engines 903 ci-powered and SpeedTech nitrous oxide-huffing Larry Jeffers Race Cars-built chassis to cooperate.
