DiDomenico to Debut New Engine at NMCA Season Opener in Florida

Posted By: Mike Galimi
By Mary Lendzion Mike DiDomenico has made it clear that he's committed to being competitive in NMCA VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod. His son, crew chief and tuner, Sal, is equally determined, and fortunately, they have a fine team in Gary Lucas, Adam Stablein and Blake Molnar. While Mike drove to an impressive 3.68 and 200 mph in his 1968 Camaro built by G-Force Race Cars and powered by a Brad Anderson Hemi prepared by Rage Fuel Systems with MBE heads, a Brad Anderson intake, SSI supercharger and Liberty's five-speed transmission, he had a new engine built over winter. It's a Noonan Hemi put together by Rage Fuel Systems with a Rage Fuel Systems-spec cam, MGP rods, Diamond pistons, Noonan heads, NGK sparkplugs and a Noonan intake. It's topped with a new SSI supercharger, and a set-up from Rage Fuel Systems feeds it fuel. Mike and Sal built a new set of headers for it at their shop in Ohio, CNC Performance Products, and had them coated by Jet-Hot. Our old engine was great, but we felt that we had taken it as far as we could, and that we needed a new engine to help us pick up a little more mile-per-hour, said Mike. The new engine showed significant horsepower gains on the dyno, and we're happy about that. In Xtreme Pro Mod, you can't afford to fall far behind. You have to stay on top of it. Along with those changes, Mike chose to go with a FuelTech engine management system. We took all of the old electronics out, and Gary Lucas spent a good part of the winter rewiring the car, which is a huge undertaking, said Mike. He did a phenomenal job. When the work was done a few weeks ago, Mike made some half-track test passes at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida. We wanted to make sure everything was working properly and to start collecting data, and we really liked what we saw, said Mike. After that, we went to Rage Fuel Systems in North Carolina, where Mike Kopchick went through the whole engine just to be sure everything was still good, and he did some fine-tuning, as well as some chassis and suspension work. With that, Mike, Sal and crew are ready for the first NMCA race of the year, the Whipple Superchargers NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem presented by Holbrook Racing Engines, this weekend at Bradenton Motorsports Park. There, Mike's head-turner of a car will boast banners for companies that have supported him, including Rage Fuel Systems, Robots Done Right, Tub O Towels, CNC Performance Products, JetHot Coatings and NGK. We're very excited about starting the race season, said DiDomenico, who also will have help from Richard Burns from Rage Fuel Systems at this weekend's race and other races. We have good equipment and a great crew, and we're confident that we have as much of a shot as everyone else in Xtreme Pro Mod.
