De Lago To Race NMCA Season-Opener And Then Turn Car Over To Cervelli

Posted By: Mike Galimi
In the 1967 Nova he's had since high school, Tommy De Lago drove to a personal best of 7.93 in Boninfante Racing NA 10.5 at the 16th Annual Honeywell Garrett NMCA All-American Nationals last summer at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio. While that competitive elapsed-time was cause for celebration, he's confident that even more can be coaxed from his combination consisting of a 405ci small-block Chevy built by Ian Landies of Mid-South Racing Engines, Chevrolet Performance heads massaged by 3V Performance, billet aluminum intake and carburetor by Mid-South Racing and a Jerico 5-speed transmission paired with a Boninfante clutch. He'll give it a go at the 16th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem, March 8-11 at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, but then, he'll temporarily turn the car over to his longtime friend, Frank Cervelli, so that he can focus on his role as a crew chief for Kalitta Motorsports driver Shawn Langdon and his Global Technology Funny Car. Fans may remember that Cervelli, who works in the machine shop for Don Schumacher Racing, was behind the wheel of De Lago's car for Boninfante Racing NA 10.5 competition at the 16th Annual SDPC Raceshop NMCA World Street Finals last fall at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, as De Lago, was who was at the time a crew chief for the recently retired Funny Car driver Alexis DeJoria, was working at an NHRA race. There aren't that many naturally aspirated heads-up classes anymore, so it's good to see that Boninfante Racing NA 10.5 is growing year after year, but because of my work schedule, I can't be at all of the races, said De Lago, whose sponsors include HardWear Apparel and Kim Cervelli. If Frank's in the hunt for the championship by the time the NMCA race at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio rolls around in August, then he'll stay in the driver's seat. If not, I'll drive at that race. Either way, we want to support the class.
