12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals Friday Coverage

Posted By: Event Coverage Team

Today's 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center All-Star Nationals program kicked off early, with racers hitting the track at 7:30 a.m. to allow for those who paid for Thursday's delayed test n tune to complete their hits before Friday's regular program kicked off. Today will see two rounds of qualifying in the heads-up and index classes, while competitors in the Chevrolet Performance Street Car Challenge, Dodge // Mopar Hemi Shootout, True Street classes enjoy time trial runs. The competition is heating up at Atlanta Dragway as racer plot a course toward the Aerospace Component's Winner's Circle.

[gallery columns="2" size="large" ids="17376,17377"] Here is how today's festivities will unfold during the 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center All-Star Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Making the trip to Atlanta Dragway from Zeeland, Michigan, Jeff Neibarger's 2011 Camaro is splitting duty between the TorqStorm True Street class and the TorqStorm display on the manufacturer's midway. Powered by an E85-burning, forged 6.2-liter, this six-speed-manual machine has run a best of 10.7 at 134 mph courtesy of a single TorqStorm blower.

Always full of confidence and smiles, MagnaFuel Open Comp racer Kevin White takes on his challenges with the same enthusiasm. After a Labor Day weekend track rental led to a grenaded engine in the burnout box on the first test pass, he leapt into action. Contacting BES Racing Engines for a fresh duplicated of his 584-cube, Big Chief-headed engine, Kevin picked it up the Tuesday before this race. He spent 36 hours without sleep helping get the engine swapped in, and he arrived in time to make a run at the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle.

Dan DeStefano is a Mustang guy through and through. This year he brought out this bright-blue classic. With a new engine and a new converter, this ARP Open Comp racer is good for low nines at over 140 mph. DeStefano built the Chris Alston Chassisworks chassis himself and powered it with the aforementioned 9.2-deck SVO block topped by Trick Flow High Port heads that squeezes out a 14.5:1 compression and revving to 8,000 rpm. He likes making the trip down to the 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center All-Star Nationals because his fellow racers are so friendly.

You don't see a lot of newer GTOs on the road, much less a 3,900-pound goat that rips off low-nines. Motivated by a robust engine based on a Warhawk LS-7X block filled with Callies rods and a Callies crankshaft. This rugged engine gets boost by way of an F-1a ProCharger pullied for 18 psi. That engine is supported by an RPM-prepped FL65e trans and a D.S.S. 9-inch IRS setup. Don Dixon can still street-drive this air-conditioned machine, but this weekend he hopes to take a cruise to the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle in LME Street King.

David Swain's 1969 Mustang has a lot of drag passes on it. Built to resemble an early 80s Super Stocker, it is powered by a 427 FE topped by Edelbrock cylinder head. Backed by a C4 auto with a 5,000-rpm stall converter, this ARP Open Comp machine runs high 10s.

LME Street King stalwart Steve Griswold started the season with success, but since Bradenton, he fought a throttle body issue. A recent swap to a Granatelli Motorsports unit had his car up and running well. Saying that the crash that precipitated a host of upgrades to this car inspired him to push harder to win, Griswold says he is more focused and confident in his pursuit of victory.

Believe it or not, this is one of several 1984 Mustang GT350s owned by Terry Strange. This one evolved into an all-out race car that has run in Outlaw 10.5 and Pro Street. These days it is powered by a 406-cube small-block topped by Hammerhead Hemi heads. It feeds power through an RPM-prepped Turbo 400 transmission. Recently he tuned it up for more power to compete in the rough and tumble ranks of Dart NA 10.5 presented by Diamond Pistons. Jody Blalock Jr.'s 1947 Hudson Super Six always finds the spotlight, as it's one cool classic car. Blalock Jr., who has had the car for ten years, shared with us that its 496 cubic-inch engine sustained some serious damage last year, but has been repaired, and Blalock Jr. is in the process of dialing it in for his chosen category, MagnaFuel Open Comp. It's a couple tenths slow at the moment, as it should be running 9.70s, but we'll get it figured out, said Blalock Jr. Craig Sullivan (left) is back with his Barn Burner supercharged 69 Daytona in the NMCA VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod, and he's got some new crew faces in his pit. Tommy Radloff (center) came on board to run Sully's race program and engine shop, Wild Irish Engines, while Sully's son, Michael (right), recently joined to the team and is having a blast racing with his father. The notorious car itself is also enjoying something new a redesigned Turbo 400 transmission from M&M that helped put Sully in the winner's circle in Tulsa earlier this year.

Driving a car that is truly built for the action at the 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals, Alan Scanlan is piloting his 2019 Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320, which included an NMCA membership in the glovebox. Competing in the Dodge // Mopar HEMI Shootout, he is running a totally stock car, as he told us I don't want to make too many my mods because Dodge is my pit crew, in reference to the car's robust warranty. He did make one important upgrade to the new Nitto NT555RII drag radial. If he makes a trip to the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle, he will also haul away an additional bonus from Nitto for running the tires.

Brad Cox is checking the tuneup on his father Ray's BES Racing Engines Pontiac-powered Firebird after a solid 4.81 hit this morning in Edelbrock Xtreme Street testing. The team has been making steady progress with this fourth-gen model, after sending Ray's second-gen Trans Am into semi-retirement. Steve Satchell of Colliersville, Tennessee, ran into LME Street King racer Steve Griswold while making hits at Memphis International Raceway and it was his influence that led Satchell to try his hand in the Proform Rumble class during the NMCA Homecoming at Memphis last year. Satchell bought his 2012 C6 Corvette as a wreck with less than 20,000 miles on the clock and added the Gran Sport wide fenders on it during the rebuild. The LS3 engine features a few upgrades that have enabled the 6L80-equipped machine to run 10.10 in the quarter-mile on motor alone. He'll be racing towards an 11.00 index this weekend in the Chevrolet Performance Challenge series and plans to add a roll cage for a future in LME Street King. The Chevrolet Performance Stock category has been part of the NMCA and Chevrolet Performance Challenge series now for several years, and the first car to don the required DR525 crate engine was this Hugger Orange Camaro SS now owned by Jeff Heintz. Over the winter, Heintz rewired the Camaro with Spaghetti Menders components to remove some unnecessary factory wiring and clean things up. Jacob Weigl performed a well-deserved engine rebuild over the winter as the 383 in his Malibu wagon has served duty in the Detroit Truetrac Nostalgia Muscle Car class for 4 years. The overhaul also included a more aggressive camshaft that has improved performance as well. New for 2020 is Jessie Coulter's ProCharger engine combination for Edelbrock Xtreme Street. The three-time class champion is looking to stay on top and felt the supercharged LS combination was the better choice over his previous turbo setup. As racers do, Coulter fired up the new engine for the first time yesterday at 4:00 pm and promptly put it on the dyno before stuffing it in the trailer for the tow to Atlanta Dragway. Yesterday we found out that Thomas and Brandon Dabbs will be competing in Proform Rumble together with their pewter Metallic C5 Corvette and Camaro Z28, and that makes two father-and-son teams that will be racing in Rumble, as Dewayne and Nicholas Massengale have been class regulars for years now with their pair of blue Camaros. Dan Nusbaum has been a True Street fan and competitor for some time, and he's here this weekend competing in his 1987 Mustang. The car has been a low-buck build with Nusbaum scoring numerous deals on parts. That horse trading led to the Mustang becoming powered by a 434ci small-block Chevy engine backed by a BTE Turbo 400 transmission. Nusbaum hopes to one day perform a Coyote swap on the car, but will enjoy its 9-second, all-motor time slips in NMCA True Street competition. NMCA VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod welcomes two-time NHRA Top Sportsman champion Jeffrey Barker and his Bahrain 1 Racing-backed Barker Max Camaro for weekend. Barker brought the world's fastest NHRA-legal nitrous injected Pro Mod for some extra testing on the excellent track prep here at the 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals with none other than the famous Stevie Fast Jackson (pictured) heading up the tune and calling the shots. Current NMCA VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod points leader Eric Gustafson may hold the advantage on paper, but he has been struggling with his Coast Packing Co.-backed entry for the past few races as yet-to-be-found gremlins have been causing the car to shut off unexpectedly. The car was completely rewired and a new Haltech engine management system was added. Additionally, the engine was sent back to Noonan Race Engineering for some changes, and the guys are putting the first hits on it this weekend with high hopes that their problems are now in the past. Round one of qualifying produced a 3.998 at 191.29 mph hit so it seems they're heading in the right direction, but crew chief Cameron Halsey (pictured) has his lucky shirt on just in case. NMCA Chevrolet Performance Stock racer Keith Vaughn and his C4 Corvette are fresh off a runner up finish at Bradenton earlier this year. Vaughn would have set the speed record for the class there as well, but didn't back it up. He knows the hot Atlanta summer conditions mean it's unlikely he'll be able to trap that same number again, but is looking forward to making some good passes and just having fun overall. His first qualifying run yielded a 10.400 at 127.13 mph hit to put him in fifth for now. Qualifying has begun at today's running of the 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. It may be hot outside, but drivers are still dishing out some serious numbers.
