Saturday Coverage NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing presented by HPJ Performance

Posted By: Event Coverage Team
As expected, there were plenty of eye-popping and exciting passes during qualifying yesterday at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing presented by HPJ Performance at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Just one of those passes was made by Jimmy Dahl, who hung the front tires in his Mustang (pictured) packing a small-block Ford and Precision turbo in the combined NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street/NMRA Edelbrock Renegade category.

Sunday's schedule is as follows: The threat of rain tomorrow is not taking the wind out of our sails, as we're focused on running as many rounds as possible today, and may go beyond what's currently shown on this schedule. We have revised the run order as we are trying to move through the day as quickly as possible! NMCA/NMRA officials closely watching the weather have determined that the NMCA MagnaFuel Open Comp/NMRA ARP Open Comp All-Star Shootout will be moved from this event to the Inaugural Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival presented by Force Engineering, July 22-25, at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan. Mike DiDomenico came to this event second in VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod points, and he's working hard to move up in the chase for the championship. While he had solenoid and fuel issues that prevented him from pulling up to the beam for the first round of qualifying, he made up for it by blasting to a 3.67 to lead the second round of qualifying yesterday. His Camaro, built by G-Force Race Cars and boasting a Noonan Hemi put together by Rage Fuel Systems and paired with an SSI supercharger, has been carrying him to increasingly quicker and faster passes this year. Working around-the-clock to help him make it happen are his son, crew chief and tuner, Sal, and Gary Lucas, Adam Stablein, Blake Molnar and Richard Burns. Lee Hartman has already had some success this weekend, as he replaced his personal best of 7.91 with a 7.88 during qualifying yesterday in his COPO Camaro in Holley EFI Factory Super Cars. The car has under the hood a 350 cubic-inch engine built by Ray Barton Racing Engines and enhanced with a supercharger, and Hartman, of Canfield, Ohio, said that he, his team, family and friends have put a lot of hard work into its set-up. We're currently looking at all of the data to see what adjustments we need to make for the next round of qualifying, said Hartman, who also competes in NHRA Factory Stock Showdown and whose car commands attention with paint by Dean Locke. We hope to pick up to 7.70s. ARP Nitrous Pro Street racer Jeremy Lyons spent much of last year making upgrades to his Camaro, and he's back in action this weekend at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing presented by HPJ Performance at World Wide Technology Raceway. He and Dean Lee of Compression, Fabrication and Machine cut his car's stock steel front to two frame rails, and reworked the front suspension. They installed Afco struts and TBM brakes, swapped spindles and went with a smaller Afco radiator and lithium battery, as well as a lighter chute on the back of the car. When it was all said and done, it was 193 pounds lighter. With a big-block Chevrolet by Knieriem Racing Engines, PKRE nitrous system, BTE Powerglide by Chris Gootee of Gootee's Transmission, converter by Greg Slack Converters and an AEM datalogger, Lyons, who didn't have time to shake the car down prior to this event, laid down a 4.67 and is currently in the fourth spot in qualifying. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="21600,21602,21603,21601"] Many fans know Tom Hammonds from his days of racing Pro Street and NHRA Pro Stock, or as a former professional basketball player, but this weekend, he debuted an absolutely beautiful 1969 Camaro SS in Edelbrock Xtreme Street. Built by Bickel Race Cars, it features a 364 cubic-inch LS bullet by Steve Morris Engines and a Vortech V-30 94C. The famous and friendly Hammonds has only had a couple of shakedown passes in the car, but has already soared to a 4.75 to qualify in the twelfth spot out of 26 entries in the very competitive category. We look forward to seeing more of this car in the days to come. Kentuckian Mike Moss has been competing in Quick Fuel Technology Nostalgia Super Stock for more than 20 years, and his son, Brandon Moss, has been his crew chief the whole time. The father and son make a good team, as Mike drove to a 10.01 on a 10.00 index to qualify quite nicely in the thirteenth spot out of 38 entries in his cool and classic 1966 Biscayne with a 427 cubic-inch big-block Chevrolet under its hood. Rick Hornback returned to Dart NA 10.5 competition this year with a new engine under the hood of his Chevelle. It's a 632 cubic-inch big-block Chevrolet built by fellow racer Scott Williams that works in unison with a four-speed Lenco and Boninfante clutch. Hornback also installed new Afco shocks on his car, and Chris Spall of Spall's Chassis and Performance is on board to tune the chassis and engine, and to take care of the clutch. Rick's son, Tyler Hornback, is invaluable as his longtime crew chief. We're in the early shakedown stage for the new engine, we're getting the chassis dialed in and we have a long way to go, but we'll get there, said Hornback, who picked up a personal best of 8.48 this weekend. The beautiful blue 1969 Camaro owned by Tony Karamitsos has been turning heads all day, and for good reason. The car, which is capable of high 7-second passes and which he wheeled to the runner-up finish with an 8.25 average in TorqStorm Superchargers True Street today, is incredibly clean and rockets down the race track with a small-block Chevrolet by Ultra Tech Racing and a 98mm turbo by Precision. The engine sips E85 fuel and the power is backed by a Turbo 400 by RPM Transmissions, and a Nitrous Dave's Racing Electronics system is on board. The car, which weighs 3,645 pounds with Karamitsos in it, rolls on a Moser M9 rear end, leafspring suspension and Weld wheels wrapped with Mickey Thompson drag radials, and in addition to seeing it in TorqStorm Superchargers True Street at upcoming NMCA events, fans can catch it during Hot Rod Drag Week. Helping Karamitsos hightail it in his car are his son, Nick Karamitsos, as well as Dave Reppert, Tony Maez, Jason Duell and Sam Cololillo.
