The OEM racecar program is booming and the time is right for the release of a heads-up COPO competition for the naturally aspirated crowd. Going down during the 2^nd annual Chevrolet Performance COPO Camaro Shootout presented by COPO Parts Direct is the newly-formed COPO NA Showdown and it all happens during the Nitrous Supply NMRA/NMCA All-American Nationals August 27-30 at Summit Motorsports Park (Norwalk, OH). The category is modeled after the Top Stock class and takes aim at the NHRA and NMCA Stock Eliminator legal COPO Camaros in the FS/B through FS/E categories. COPO Parts Direct spearheaded the project by using racer and fan feedback to create this exciting and new category. NMCA and the COPO Shootout is the perfect place for the racers to let it all hangout and go fast without fear of triggering the automatic HP factor system, said Rich Rinke, COPO Parts Direct founder and owner. He went on to explain that with the supercharged cars getting so much attention, the naturally aspirated factory hot rods had no place to run heads-up. Not only was I looking for a place to race heads-up, but I had heard the same sentiment from many other of the COPO racers that we know and work with. NMCA General Manager and National Event Director Rollie Miller shared similar thoughts, the COPO Camaro program is awesome and running these car heads-up will be fun for the racers and fans. What better place to do it then at the All-American Nationals, which is one of the most prestigious events on the NMCA tour. The heads-up NA COPO Showdown is a separate category from the COPO Camaro Shootout, which is run in an Open Comp format. The NA COPO Showdown is open to all factory-built and clone modern COPO Camaros that run in NHRA/NMCA Stock eliminator. NMCA will utilize a 6.75 horsepower-to-weight ratio to balance all of the different engine combinations. All other Stock Eliminators rules are required and all vehicles are required to be weighed by NMCA officials and subject to fuel testing during competition. The field is all-run based on the best elapsed time during two scheduled qualifying sessions, utilize an NHRA Pro ladder, and run off a .500 Pro Tree. Two qualifying rounds are scheduled for Friday with eliminations taking place on Saturday. Competitors are allowed to double-enter into the NMCA Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo category.
