Thursday Coverage — 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem

The long off-season is over as the gates opened at Bradenton Motorsports Park for the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines. With sunny skies and moderate temperatures, the season opener of the NMCA Muscle Car Nationals series has the stage set for another weekend of impressive performances. The action kicks off today with three rounds of test and tune runs, so stay tuned for updates throughout the weekend as racers aim for a trip to the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle.

Here’s a look at how things will go down on Friday at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines.

As the testing runs came to a close for the day at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines, racers, crew, family, and sponsors convened at the Weldon Racer Appreciation Happy Hour to enjoy snacks and cold beverages.

Rocking a new dual-carb intake from Stage 5 under the hood of his 1964 Plymouth Savoy, Tom Osterkamp was dialing in the jetting on his combo. Freshened over the off-season with new rings, bearings, and such, the car was running well in testing earlier in the week, but he changed the jetting looking for more. He looked to return to the earlier setup to get the performance back this weekend at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines in the hopes of taking a trip to the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle.

Rocking a new paint job this season, Charlie Atkinson is dropping the ’Hammer at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines — the ROUSH Performance Sledgehammer crate engine, that is. His 1968 Mustang’s old powerplant had a lot of runs on the clock, so he freshened it with the all-new engine. He says the car ran well last weekend with the NMRA, and he is still dialing the car in for this weekend’s warmer air in MagnaFuel Open Comp.

Running out of the Riccardi Racing stable, Tom Ullery built this Fox with Rick Riccardi. Running it in MagnaFuel Open Comp this weekend at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines, Ullery is looking to run high eights with a 410-cube Ford small-block topped by Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads and backed by a C4 transmission. When we stopped by, the team sought some wiring to regain rpm control on the track.

After racing his Mustang with the NMRA last weekend, Michael Tagg returned to Bradenton Motorsports Park to race his full-size Fairlane in Detroit Truetrac Nostalgia Muscle Car. Seven years in the making, it is running in the quarter mile for the first time at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines. He hopes the 462 stoker/Jerico manual/9-inch rear combo will yield 10.70s on the 1,320 this weekend.

MagnaFuel Open Comp racer Kevin White freshened just about everything in the off-season — except his BES power plant — and he’s feeling great about the 2020 season. Sporting a fresh driveline courtesy of RPM Racing Transmissions, Strange Engineering, and TCI, his 1972 Nova is looking better than ever too thanks to detail work from Elite Motors. He ran a string of 8.90s in testing yesterday, and plans to pull the ballast out this afternoon to see what his machine can do.

After a clash with the wall in Indy, LME Street King racer Steven Griswold is back to kick off the Chevrolet Performance Street Car Challenge season at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines. He and crew chief Richard Brannen (cooking up the secret tune under that towel) revamped the driver side of the Corvette and turned to RPM Transmissions for a fresh rearend. Brannen tuned up the torque converter and the car ran 8.26 at 167 in testing. This weekend Griswold is gunning for a trip to the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle.

It’s a beautiful day at Bradenton Motorsports Park as racers are already laying down test hits at the 18th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem Presented by Holbrook Racing Engines, including the Detroit muscle stars in the Holley EFI Factory Super Cars class…
