While Allen Johnson retired from NHRA Pro Stock competition last year, he didn’t retire from racing altogether.
In fact, the Tennessee-based driver who was a fan-favorite in his Dodge Dart and earned 27 national event wins and a world championship in the cutthroat category, is piloting the Jeff Teuton-owned 2015 Dodge Challenger this year.
“This was all sort of dreamed-up right after the first of the year,” said Johnson, with a laugh.
With no time to test, he made his debut in the Factory Stock Showdown category in the car at the NHRA Gatornationals in March at Gaineville Raceway in Florida, and spent the weekend working to dial in the combination featuring a 364 cubic-inch engine, Whipple supercharger and ProTrans 727 TorqueFlite transmission.
“We’re green and we’re rookies when it comes to this car, but we’ve talked with people who have run this kind of car about how to tune it and race it,” said Johnson, whose crew includes his wife, Pam Johnson, dad and championship-winning IHRA Super Stock driver Roy Johnson and Jerry McBee. “It will take us a little time, but we’ll get there.”
Now, Johnson, who tunes the combination in the Mopar-backed car with his dad using Holley EFI, is preparing to take part in his second race in the hotrod, as he’s heading to this weekend’s 10th Annual NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by Mahle Motorsport, where he’ll enter the ever-exciting Holley EFI Factory Super Cars category.
“We learned about Factory Super Cars when we attempted to test at Bradenton the day after the NMCA race there in March, and we thought, ‘Hey, we have another place to race,’ which is great,” said Johnson. “Now we just need to go from A to B three or four times to get seat time, and then we’d like to run low 8s.”
