VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod driver Adam Flamholc is back after suffering a crash late last season and having to take some time away from the driver’s seat. He’s got a new Chris Duncan Race Cars chassis underneath the Corvette’s body that’s been fitted with a few parts from the old car, and an updated Hemi engine that’s been topped with a new PSI C-rotor twin screw blower. Flamholc recently clocked a 3.83 at the PDRA season opener, but the car was stuck in high gear the whole run, so he’s expecting even better performance from the machine. This weekend, he’ll be turning down the blower and adding some weight to the car, but it appears the car is pretty well sorted, especially with a new converter in front of the two-speed Lenco/Bruno transmission.
The Mickey Thompson guys are on the property and hard at work servicing the NMCA racers.
Stepping up into Pro Mod this year is Street Outlaw champion Eric Gustafson. His Coast Packing Camaro featured a Hemi with a ProCharger blower bolted up front, and the team has been putting in several test sessions to get a handle on the new car.
New for this year is the Dodge Hemi Shootout, which is designed for late-model Mopar enthusiasts who have Gen III-Hemi-powered vehicles and want to get some time on track at a national event. The class is run similar to the NMCA’s Gear Vendors True Street class, and Mopar is paying for the first 75 entries!
Benjamin Board (at right) has his Xtreme Pro Mod Camaro ready for battle this weekend. The Illinois native had a brush with a wall last season, and just got the car back from the paint show a few weeks ago. It’s powered by a 521ci, BAE-based Hemi engine with an F3R-136 ProCharger blower.
Back behind the wheel of Pro Mod again is Don Walsh Jr., who picked up white C7 Corvette last year. He slung a Walsh Motorsports Hemi engine between the frame rails and hung a pair of Precision turbochargers off of it to provide boost. Testing a few weeks ago went well, and with Walsh’s rather successful racing history, he should be a championship contender.
MagnaFuel Open Comp racer Bruce Boyle has seen plenty of success in that class, but with the addition of the Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo class to the NMCA lineup, he started thinking about a class switch. As the Monza he normally campaigns didn’t fit the rules, Boyle picked up this IHRA Stock Eliminator 1985 Iroc-Z Camaro. It packs a 330hp crate engine and runs “under” the 11.95 index it was built for. With a bit of advice from fellow Open Comp and Combo racer Kurt Neighbor, Boyle should be in for a fun year.
The air is cool here at Bradenton Motorsports Park during today’s test and tune, and we’ve been watching a number of racers set some very low times. There’s no shortage of Holley EFI Factory Super Car entries, as many of them are hoping to be the first into the 7s. Class sponsor Holley is putting of 5K to the first racer in qualifying or eliminations to run the number, and another 5k if the car runs Holley EFI. Top Fuel driver Leah Pritchett debuting a new Dodge Challenger Drag Pak Factory Super Car ride out of the Don Schumacher Racing camp posted an 8.08-second run earlier, and Chris Holbrook (pictured) improved on that with an 8.04-second pass.
