NMCA Nitrous Pro Street’s Rice Adding NMRA Renegade to Her Resume

After racing his turbocharged 1989 Mustang coupe in OSCA in the late 1990s, Ed Rice sold the car he refers to as the “grey squirrel” to a friend.

But he recently bought it back, and is preparing it for his daughter, Jennifer Brooke Rice, to pilot in NMRA Edelbrock Renegade while also piloting her 2009 Mustang in NMCA ARP Nitrous Pro Street.

Ed fabricated for the car a 25.3 chrome moly cage, and will soon install Racecraft torque boxes and control arms.

While a Ford nine-inch rear-end and Strange center section are in place, the car is to receive Afco shocks in the rear and Santhuff’s struts in the front, and will roll on 275 drag radial tires before coming to a stop via Aerospace brakes.

The Rice’s hired Russell Stone’s Kuntz and Company to handle the building of the 8.2 deck 365 cubic-inch small-block Ford topped with Trick Flow Specialties heads, and while superchargers and turbos have been carefully considered, it’s likely the team will go with a 76mm Precision turbo.

A Holley EFI system and Weldon fuel pump will be in place, and a Powerglide will help plant the power.

“NMRA Renegade is a very competitive class, and it hasn’t seen a pushrod turbo combination, but I’m pretty sure the rules are close enough that we could get a turbo car to run with the supercharged cars,” said Ed. “If not, we’ll switch to a supercharger.”

Jennifer Brooke, who finished second in 2016 NMCA ARP Nitrous Pro Street points in her nitrous- and small-block Ford-powered and big-tire 2009 Mustang, also plans to throw her hat into the Ultra Street ring.

“Racing one nitrous car and one turbo car, and one big-tire car and one small-tire car will be challenging for sure, but it will be fun,” said Jennifer Brooke. “Dad’s been wanting to get back to turbos and I’ve been wanting to go small-tire racing, and now we are.”

The team is hoping to make the 23rd Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout, March 2-5, 2017 at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida and the 15th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem, March 9-12, also at Bradenton Motorsports Park.
