The First Annual
Kooks Custom Headers NMCA Muscle Car Nationals at Atco Raceway in Atco New
Jersey offered a little bit of everything for racers and fans alike as the NMCA
Edelbrock Drag Racing Series held it’s third event of the season. Despite
oppressive heat and humidity, the event showcased some of the quickest and
fastest cars in a quarter-mile showdown which included 15-classes of NMCA
action.
Mark Micke improved his almost flawless 2008 season in Scorpion Pro
Street after making his third final appearance in as many races where he
defeated first-time finalist Chris Rini 6.49 at 220 mph over Rini’s close, but
losing 6.52 at 217.
In Nitto Tire Super Street 10.5W, first time NMCA racer
Tommy Mauro, caught a few breaks and outlasted the competition with a final
round win over Jim Blair. Neither car hooked up in the final, but it was Mauro
who won the pedalfest with an 8.07 to Blair’s 11.39.
In ARP Nostalgia Pro
Street, Jeff Colletta, used a holeshot to beat Jim Widener. Colletta’s 7.71,
combined with an .006 reaction time, was just enough to clip Widener’s quicker
7.68 after Widener left .043 seconds behind Colletta.
In Vortech
Supercharges Xtreme Street, 2007 class champion Danny Shemwell grabbed his first
win of the year after beating a tire-shaking Cameron Coble in the final with an
8.32 to 9.51 battle.
Mike DeMayo Jr., earned his second win of the year in
Comp Cams Pro Stock after stopping Bowling Green winner Andy Schmidt on the
tree. DeMayo’s .136 advantage at the start kept him far enough in front of the
hard-charging Schmdit to get the win, despite a slower 8.77 to Schmidt’s 8.70.
In Car Craft Street Race John Macaluso performed the hat trick after besting
a red-lighting Tim Hendricks in the final. And in BFGoodrich Tires Mean Street
Jeremy Gillam earned the largest payout in the history of the class after
winning the JE Pistons Shootout and the race. By winning both, Gillam earned a
$5,000 bonus from BFGoodrich bringing his total take for the weekend to more
than $10,000 in cash and contingency.
Tremec True Street featured some of
the quickest street cars in then Northeast as Paul Ferrucci and Marc
Schankweiler battled for supremacy with Ferrucci nipping “Schank” with an 8.69
three-lap average to “Schanks” 8.71. For complete True Street results click the

Powel. Christopher Dufresne and his 300C ousted the 2006 Charger of Chris Janczy
for the High Horse Performance and BES Hemi Shootout win. The winner of the
runoff between all three winners was D’Amore who bested Perez to win a
supercharger kit from Vortech Superchargers.
