I wanted to know if it was legal to cut out the flat portion of the trunk and replace it with sheet metal.

Sorry, its a 1980 Malibu running in Extreme Street.

Flat area of floor-pan starting at “kickup” for rear end and rearward may be replaced with a minimum of .024” inch thick steel or .032” inch aluminum. Magnesium is prohibited.
