I have a question.
Why is every class in Pro racing offered this but True Street?
The last time I checked, I pay the same for my MSD or my N.O.S. system, my tires, cams, heads, trannys, conveters, gauges and so forth as everyone else is in the other catagories.
Thanks,
Scott

Good question Scott. It was offered for the first year and even FFW used to do it way back when. The only answers I ever received was that the race series wanted to keep the class for the little guys--mainly locals that would come out. Maybe they figured that if we could get (relatively) decent $$ then you would get guys in it just for the $$ and it would drive out the intended racers. I know that it would make it a lot easier for us to do the travelling we do if there was the chance of getting more than the $250 payout for first place. I heard a rumor that NMRA was considering it for '04 and I thought that PRO might be similar but as you can see it is'nt happening this year :( I guess all we can do is keep bugging them whenever we can--I know a lot of racers wo would like to see contingency $$ for the class.

Scott,
Contingency has not been offered for True Street at this time because when the system was created the idea was that contingency is for the traveling racer who attends generally more than one event.
It has been considered to try to increase the car counts. We increased the purse last year ($100 each to the 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, etc) averages and we hope to kick off some more purses or prizes for True Street this year.

Quoted from the 2003 Rules
There will be trophies and awards for not only the "King of True Street" (quickest average), and runner up but also for the following: Closest averaged ET that is not quicker than the following - 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, 14.00, and 15.00. True Street racing will be conducted at all PRO drag racing events.

Hi Paul,
Won't make Atco but hopefully others--our car was stolen and stripped from the pits at the Memphis PRO race. Insurance is not paying us a dime--we're out of pocket $25K. Hoping to get it together for later in the season.

FWIW, I know at least 4 different racers that DO travel to the events and run in True Street--we are one of them. Don't get me wrong, we are not in it for the $$ but when someone travels 500-1000 miles for the race it would make it a bit easier on the wallet if there was some contingency $$ available. I know in our case it would mean making another race or two each season. I have other ideas for increasing the counts and payouts that wouldn't cost PRO a cent to implement.

Hi Greg,
I'd like to say that it is just about done but that's not the case :( Apart from cleaning it up I haven't done much to it--was waiting to see what kind of $ the insurance theives were going to pay out. You probably heard that they dropped me and are paying ZERO!! Seems I violated the contract by modifying it and not telling them. They say the policy was void back to '93 and paid me back my premiums. Better than nothing but far from the $25K I'm out.
We do have most of the parts to re-build (rotating ass.,blower, heads, intake, headers, trans, ect. most everything but a block and electronics. ) To make matters worse, I can't find anybody to insure a modified car--normal companies run away when I say "custom" and the speciality company around here won't touch it unless it is 15 yr or older. Lost of places in the States will do it but since I'm stuck here in Ontario, they aren't licenced to sell out of country. One of the many reasons we hate living up here. The last thing I want to do is sink another ton of $$ into the car and not have fire/theft insurance on it. I'm looking at an '89 car and a '79--both rollers and super clean and the '79 had gone into the 8's. If I can't find insurance for the '93 soon I will just buy one of the other cars and build it. Then slowly return the '93 to stock and make a clean driver out of it over the next few years. At any rate we should be ready with "a" car by June, if not a bit sooner. Either way it'll be a sick ride--looking at 8 sec potential when it is all said and done :) I'm picking up a digital camera on the weekend so I'll get some pics off to you soon.

Greg,
The work on the Camaro is starting again after a break. My shop has been bought by another company and with the holidays and the move I havn't done anything since early December. With the closing of my shop my car is now sitting under a bunch of stuff that I had there. Today I and heading over to the body shop with the doors, fenders and decklid.... Gotta start somewhere.... I will shoot some pictures as progress continues.... It looks like our first even will be Bowling Green.
Here is the Info on the company that bought me out and hired me.... They specialize in water-jet cutting and wire edm - Now they also have a general machine shop... Check out there web site..

Help me understand why a racer would choose True Street over Brackets or another heads up race.
You have to pay a two day fee an True Street is only one day?
You don't actually race anyone, just run 3 time trials to figure an average?
Is Nitrous allowed? If it is, can someone run two runs over and the nitrous to run under on another and get a great average to win?

Well, in our case, True Street and the brackets are the only class our car fits into ( a lot are like this). As far as the brackets go, although I admire the guys who are good at it (I by the way, AM NOT) I just don't get excited watching guys hit the brakes before the lights--no offence to those that enjoy it. Our car would be prety well (performance wise) capable in a Renegade type class but it isn't legal for that. Add in the fact that I would get killed at the tree most times.

Same entry fee but, most ORG's let you run brackets on Sunday so, it's like getting to race twice for the single admission price.

That's right, the quickest average is the winner and the second quickest is the R/U and so forth.
Is Nitrous allowed?
Yes, it is the most open class out there.
If it is, can someone run two runs over and the nitrous to run under on another and get a great average to win?
Not sure I totally understand the question but, yes, you can do pretty much whatever you want for the runs--if you intend to be the quickest then you want to run as quick as possible BUT, if you are going for the $$ for say, the quickest 11 sec slot (closest to 11.00) then you might want to slow or speed up one or more of the passes.
We really enjoy the class, for us, it's not about winning $$ but the exposure we get (sponsors and magazine features). For sure, we'd like to get more $$ from it but for now we are happy doing it this way.

Yup you understood my last question.
Other than being listed on the Pro site, do True Street winners of say the 11 second bracket, get any exposure or just the winner of true street?

I thought about running it at Bradenton, but didn't know about the "free" entry into brackets on sunday until it was too late. I think the 30 mile cruise and 3 back-to-back laps "weeds out" the poser street cars and the real ones win or have decent averages.
I still think drag racing should be for the fun and not the money, and keeping the contingency out of it helps deter the people wanting the cash. Hell, look at HOT ROD's pump gas drags. Most of those cars probably don't see the street, and there's no purse, but people ran 8's this year to win, and you had to be in the low 9's to hit the top ten. The year before you could run a 10.00 average and make the top ten. Glory and fun is what drag racing is (and should be) all about.
Okay, I'm off the soapbox....:D

I would like to see some contingency support in True Street. I think the overall winner should get more also. I think the winner should get at least $500. Contingency would really help though. When you can't even cover the cost of coming to the race, that discourages people from coming very far.
Hi,
I agree tha tit would be great to see at least enough prize $$ to cover expences. We travel at least 300 miles and as much as 1300 miles to get to these True/Wild Street type races and I can tell you that we don't even come close to breaking even at it--even with several forst place finishes over the years but, it is fun and we know that going into it.
For us, we keep at it in hopes of continued support from our sponsors and gaining experience to move up to one of the heads up classes in the future.
I have asked all three org. (NMCA,NMRA,FFW) about larger payouts and contingencies and the answer I got was they want to keep out the cars that would come srtictly for the $$ and try to attract to local guys.
Since I feel that more $$ isn't coming anytime soon, I'd like to see some sort of heads up run off of the fastest top eight on Sunday and a points system set up for that that would involve a yearly Championship to entice others to travel the circut.

Hey, that's a great idea to have eliminations for the Quick8, and a points race. That should encourage more people to travel to more races. I always thought True Street was a cool class, kinda a "Who has the fastest real street car?" type of race. I think another thing that would be nice would be better media coverage of the class. Sometimes, it gets good coverage, and sometimes it only gets a little blurb. With PHR covering the class this year, I expect it'll be better.

I like what they do at WFC, with the top 16 running h/u. A smaller field would be easy to run on Sunday if they could fit us in--something the fans would enjoy seeing also as most of the cars are close to what they own or want to own.

Yes, more covereage is a good idea also. Scott does hae a couple of pages in each eiisue with the results and a short interview of the winner. MMFF also has a page or 2 for the True Street from each FFW event. I'm interested in seeing what PHR does also.

A larger purse would be great ($500) to win and also i like that PHR jumped on board for a few races , but i come out to the True street events to have fun and be there with other racers. Having a picture in PHR or FSC is good for me if i want contingency i'll have to step up alittle i mean a lot and run x/s. If u think about it, its all the same crap ( you spend a little for T/S and you get alittle , you spend a ton for X/S and you get a little more ) bottom line is that you're NOT going to make any money drag racing to make up the difference . i'lll shut up now:rolleyes:

One of the things I like about True Street payout is that everyone's definition of a "street car" is different. Some people can live with a spool, loud exhaust, 90/10 struts, poor mileage, and high maintenance, and call it their street car, while others need power steering, radio, reasonable exhaust note, reasonable mileage, etc... That being said, someone can run True Street and say, "Yeah, your car won the 9 sec. bracket, but mine won the 11 sec bracket and it is a whole lot more nice to drive daily. I like mine better." So, in a sense, everyone goes home a winner. That's what I like about True Street, a bunch of cool cars. Different people's idea of what a nice, fast street car is. Cool stuff.

Yeah, I drive one of those high maintenance "street cars", but I do drive it on the street whenever I can, year round. Fastest time so far is 8.97 @ 159 on pump gas at WFC8. Ran a 9.6 3-run average at NMCA/Bowling Green and a 9.3 3-run qualifying average at WFC8. Ran a 9.5 3-run average at the HotRod Pump Gas Drags. Hoping to get the car solidly into the 8's on pump gas and 275 drag radials.
