How do you Mean Street and Cheap Street racers feel about having to run 104 octane unleaded gas. This will certainly limit compression ratios in these classes. Will there be a few more engines damaged because of detonation...or will you simply run low compression now?

I did not see this coming. It should be interesting though. I am a little worried that we may see some detonation problems. Andy Legg

Last year's spec fuel was 100 octane. 104 octane was an upgrade.

I believe you are mistaken. The VP C-10 PRO is allowing the first two races only is R+M/2=104 octane. The VP C-14+ is R+M/2=115 octane. The cost of the two fuels in the grand scheme of things has much room for discussion. The C-14+ might have been overkill, however it did not hurt any parts due to detonation. The tune-up window on the unleaded is going to be much less forgiving. The parts that WILL be sacrificed to get the new deal figured out could far out weigh the over all fuel savings. I would also add that this rule change could potentially hurt car counts due to parts breakage. The engine rules allow for static compression ratios of 12 to 1 and higher.(Angle milled heads with .035 quinch and a flat top piston) Then you add nitrous on top of that. I don't believe VP, Sunoco, or Torco would recommend a 100 octane Unleaded for a use on a legal Cheap Street engine.

Andy,
I agree with you that this could cost the racers more money on parts rather than save them money on fuel.
What do you other Mean Street/Cheap Street guys think about this spec fuel?
It might be best to voice our concerns to tech@fasteststreetcar.com

i believe this was a sponsorship thing as far as the change goes
i have to admit ,they "pro" need to understand that all these changes make it very difficult to keep combinations .
especially this late in the year...
the rule changes are killing me ..
i can t make/comply this fast.
thanks at least for the first 2 event curtesy...

I don't have a problem with a change in manufactures. I think we could have changed providers without changing to a lower octane unleaded fuel. I have been running C-14+ for the last two years(115 Motor Octane rating. In an earlyer post I incorrectly stated that C14+ has a rating of 115 Pump Octane). Both Torco and Sunoco have some very good fuels. If the choice were mine I would use the Sunoco Maximal(very comparable to the C-14+). I have already started testing with the Sunoco GT Plus Unleaded(Motor Octane of 99). I am not comfortable with these changes but I guess will have to live with them as will everyone else in the class......Andy Legg C/S#5

Don't be surprised if an announcement is made about VP very soon:)
it may have been an attempt to slow the cars down.

PROMike and staff,
Thank you for reconsidering the fuel specs for the Cheap Street and Mean Street classes. This will be a tremendous help to us racers. Last year's group of Cheap Street racers won't have to change anything and this year's group will not have to sacrifice as many parts.
Thanks again.
